"An enormous amount of planning and preparation goes into visits of this nature. I would like to thank all the officers and staff that supported today's operation.

    Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell

Speaking to the BBC after the incident in York earlier today, he said: “Those in public life are in positions of vulnerability at times and I certainly want to live in a country, and indeed in a world, where we're not so surrounded by people minding us that we can't meet people and chat with people.

"That is certainly what the King and the Queen Consort want. They were out chatting with people [later in the day]. So I don't think they've let it affect them.

"There is always a risk, but I still think it's a small one in our nation, and this was one egg, which missed.”

King Charles has been a very accessible figure to crowds of well-wishers. He’s been shaking hands, swapping jokes and literally been a hands-on monarch during his walkabouts.

The King seems to have enjoyed the warmth of the response, such as when he met people in the days following the death of his mother. He also met crowds lining the streets in Leeds yesterday.

It’s hard to think of top politicians now risking a random gathering of people like that now.

But these can be informal and hard-to-control events, with little separation between the King and the crowds, which in this case included protestors with a ‘Not My King’ banner. And from only a few yards away, eggs were thrown.

The King seemed unperturbed, the police responded quickly, but by then the eggs had already landed.

"It's a really exciting day and a big day, I think, for the King coming to York.

"There's going to be lots of references back to his mother.

"So, as well as this being a day where he's professionally being King and coming out and about and meeting people here in York I think, on a personal level, it's really going to mean something to him to be here.

"There are so many memories of his mum being here, back in 2012 (see below), and then unveiling that statue, the first statue being unveiled of the Queen since her death, I think it will be a really emotive, poignant day on a personal level for the King."
