    "But, minutes before the assembly is due to meet, a decree is handed down from the speaker's/business office that the meeting had been cancelled."

    Arlene Foster said any further discussions would have to be "built on a more solid foundation" and criticised Sinn Féin over their stance on Secretary of State James Brokenshire chairing talks.

    DUP leader Arlene Foster says the decision of Sinn Féin not to nominate to the position of deputy first minister today is "very regrettable and damaging to all the people we represent".

    "Indeed, we wonder whether Sinn Féin were serious about reaching agreement at this time," she said.

    "We entered discussions in good faith, and we wanted to see a new executive formed."
