Northern Ireland chamber president Ian Henry says the government must now "ramp up support" for the self employed and sole traders.

He says the economic measures announced by the Chancellor on Friday had been welcomed by the business community in NI.

But issues concerning the self employed had not been addressed, he says.

"Northern Ireland’s business base is largely made up sole traders/the self-employed, so it is now vital that ministers now also ramp up support for these people, many of whom have seen their livelihoods vanish in the blink of an eye."

Mr Henry says the self employed "need help similar in scale and scope to that put in place for those businesses with employees."

The statement said, however, that exercise is important in the current climate and that "a balance can be struck".

"A nation in lockdown could lead to enhanced anxiety, depression, social unrest, mental and physical ill health, and social poverty.

"In contrast, carefully managed local exercise, inside or outside, will provide welcome active release for individuals and families feeling trapped."
