    She succeeds Lord Dodds after defeating East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell in Friday’s vote.

    Edwin Poots has been elected as the next leader of the Democratic Unionist Party.

    The Lagan Valley MLA and Stormont agriculture, environment and rural affairs Minister defeated Sir Jeffrey Donaldson by 19 votes to 17 in Friday’s leadership vote by the party’s MPs and MLAs.

    Only DUP members elected to the House of Commons or the Northern Ireland Assembly get to vote in a leadership election, according to party rules.

    There are 28 MLAs - including outgoing leader Arlene Foster - and eight MPs, who make up the electoral college.

    In order to become party leader, the winning candidate must secure the support of at least 19 of the party's MLAs and MPs.

    Each leadership candidate spoke to party members with a vote for 10 minutes on Friday morning, and each deputy leader contender spoke for five minutes.

    Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has been the MP for Lagan Valley since 1997.

    He was first elected to Westminster as an Ulster Unionist, however, he was one of a number of their representatives, including outgoing DUP leader Arlene Foster, who defected in 2004.

    The moves came as a result of the fallout over the Good Friday Agreement peace deal in 1998.

    He is currently Northern Ireland's longest-serving MP.

    Donaldson

    A former Ulster Defence Regiment corporal, Sir Jeffrey started his political career working for the MP Enoch Powell.

    In 2007, he was appointed to the UK's Privy Council, a body which advises the Queen.

    Sir Jeffrey says if he is elected leader he will run in the 2022 assembly election and leave Westminster, with the aim of becoming first minister.

    Stormont's Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Edwin Poots has been an MLA for Lagan Valley since 1998.

    He has also served as health minister and as environment minister.

    Mr Poots has said if he becomes leader he does not want to serve as first minister, preferring to split the roles.

    Mr Poots has also worked as a farmer and served as a coucillor in Lisburn.

    Earlier this year, he stood down from his ministerial role for several weeks on health grounds.

    Both Mr Poots and his opponent Sir Jeffrey Donaldson are members of the Orange Order.

    This is the first contested leadership election in the DUP's 50-year history.

    In April, Arlene Foster announced she was stepping down as leader and Stormont's first minister following an internal revolt, with elected figures in the party writing letters calling for change.

    She says she will leave the post of leader on 28 May, and as first minister by the end of June.

    Deputy leader Nigel Dodds is also stepping aside.
