    Garda Supt Liam Geraghty released the names of the 10 victims during a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

    He said those killed were all very much involved in their local community, which is going to be severely impacted by the explosion.

    Capuchin Brother Philip Baxter of Ards Friary in Creeslough has been praising the strength of the local community on BBC Radio Ulster's Sunday Sequence programme.

    "What has struck me over the two days since this happened is the sense of resilience that was really and truly immediately evident," he said.

    Locals and those further afield have been leaving flowers near the scene.

    “I was there a few minutes after... and already by that time the people from the local houses were out with drinks of water and then they offered tea," he added.

    "I will never forget the chocolate biscuits that were being passed around as people at that moment [were] hoping it was not going to be serious as it first might appear."

    John and Bried Colhoun visited Ards Friary Catholic Church, a few miles outside of Creeslough. They said they are utterly devastated about what’s happened and can’t begin to imagine the families' pain.

    “It’s tragic, I have a second cousin and her son has been killed in it.

    “I’m originally from Creeslough myself, I moved slightly further out here now but that’s what I always consider to be my home.

    “That was our shop, we would’ve been in there all the time. It’s just terrible.

    “I watched the Mass at St Michael’s last night on the internet and it was just incredibly moving.”

    The youth section chairman at the Letterkenny Rugby Club, Jeremy Worth, told RTÉ's This Week programme about Leona's love for sport.

    "Leona started playing rugby while still at national school. She competed alongside the boys and her competitive edge and sporting prowess was evident back then," he said.

    Mr Worth added that she had developed into a "fantastic young player".

    He said Leona's teammates will be struggling to come to terms with their loss.

    "Within our club we are opening the doors tonight so that people can come together and get a bit of personal support if they need it," he said.

  6. Schools pays tribute to teenage victimspublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

    Donegal Education and Training Board (ETB) and Mulroy College have paid tribute to two of their students James Monaghan,13, and Leona Harper,14

    They also paid tribute to two mothers of students enrolled in the school, Catherine O'Donnell and Martina Martin, both among the fatalities.

    Mulroy College said a number of their students were injured at the scene and hope that those injured will make a full recovery.

    Flower tributes being laid

    “Things like this just don’t happen here,” a local man tells BBC News NI.

    The Creeslough resident, who did not want give his name, said he was still in a state of complete shock over Friday’s explosion that has stunned the whole village.

    “It’s impossible to put into words,” he said.

    “We’re still just in disbelief really over what has happened,” another local woman said. “So many people died and there are those still in hospital.

    “It could have been any one of us in that shop.”

    "The love that those people were showing for their community, friends and family - I stood there and was amazed but also terrified," he said.

    "The building was inherently unstable. I saw people in shorts and flip flops wrenching corrugated iron away with their bare hands.

    "Those people were heroic, but were placing themselves in a great deal of danger," he said.

    Dr Lane added that three of the rescue workers were injured over the course of Friday evening.

    Michael McGowan from Carrick-On-Shannon, County Leitrim, drove for three hours in his van so that he could attend this morning’s Mass at St Michael’s Church.

    “I drove down today to pay my own personal respects to the people of Cresslough," he said.

    “It’s hard to put into words what these people are going through. It’s utterly devastating.“

    “How can you deal with a tragedy like this? You can’t. All you can do is pray for those who lost their lives and their loved ones. “It’s bad enough now but the days to come will also be just so horrendous, the wakes, the funerals; it’s just so sad."

    The Bishop of Raphoe Alan McGuckian said Mass for the victims of the Creeslough tragedy this morning.

    He told a congregation, packed to overflowing in the local St Michael’s church, that the community is traumatised by the tragedy, and asking “Why?”.

    Nine of the ten people who lost their lives are from the rural parish of Dunfanagh (Clondaharkey) Creeslough , served by St Michael’s.

    The names of those killed were read aloud, one after the other, a few feet from where the tragedy unfolded.

    The names were released in a short statement to the wider public, but this shattered, close-knit community in County Donegal already knew who they had lost.

    They were friends, neighbours, relatives.

    People known throughout the village, taken in such heart-breaking circumstances.

    In the wake of such unimaginable grief and sadness, the community spirit here still finds a way to shine through.

    It can be seen in the faces of coffee shop employees who worked through the night and into the morning providing free food and drinks to the emergency responders and local residents.

    In a community childcare centre that opened its doors to offer a safe space to those in need.

    In a brief, comforting hug exchanged between an elderly woman and a young child as left church on Sunday afternoon.

    Everywhere you look you are reminded that this is a community that cares deeply for one another.
