  6. 'No further comment'published at 12:32

Some more reaction to the news that Lord Janner will face criminal proceedings on historical sexual abuse claims after a CPS U-turn.

In a statement, Leicestershire Police said: "We are aware of the decision announced today regarding the victim's right to review in relation to our on-going criminal investigation codenamed Operation Enamel."

    Quote Message

The Operation Enamel team assisted the victim's right to review process by making submissions and providing a significant body of material in support of the public interest test for prosecution. Proceedings are now active against Lord Greville Janner and in these circumstances, and in order to protect those proceedings from prejudice, Leicestershire Police will be making no further comment."

Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, has also given her response to Lancashire County Council's decision to reject an application to start fracking at a site in Lancashire. And interestingly enough, her statement is exactly the same as that made by Caroline Lucas (see post 12:04).

UPDATE: The Green Party has issued a correction, saying the quote should have been attributed to Ms Lucas and apologising for the confusion

  8. Merkel: If euro fails, Europe failspublished at 12:17

Some more news on the Greek crisis. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has stressed the need for "compromise" to solve the Greek eurozone crisis. She told members of her CDU party that euro was more than a currency, saying "if the euro fails, Europe fails".

She said "Europe survives on its ability to compromise", but she cautioned that Europe should not bend its principals, saying that eurozone members have a duty to act responsibly.

  9. May visits Tunisia hotelpublished at 12.08

    Theresa May

Home Secretary Theresa May has been visiting the hotel in Tunisia where at least 30 Britons were killed when a gunman opened fire. She was joined by Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood and laid flowers and observed a period of silence. The pair will also take part in talks with the Tunisian government on the threat from extremists.

  10. Fracking decision 'a fantastic victory'published at 12:04

    Caroline Lucas

Green MP Caroline Lucas has been responding to Lancashire County Council's decision to refuse planning application for fracking at a site in Little Plumpton. She said it was a "fantastic victory".

    Quote Message

Today’s decision proves that, in spite of all the government’s efforts to force through fracking, local communities can prevent it from going ahead. Lancashire county councillors have today set a strong example of how democracy should work – with elected politicians listening to the concerns of the people they represent. I hope the refusal of this application will open the government’s eyes to the huge opposition to fracking in this country, and help to persuade them that clean, renewable energy is where we must invest."

  11. 'Pretty bleak' options for Greecepublished at 11.53

    The Daily Politics

Beth Rigby, deputy political editor at the Financial Times, told the same programme that the options available to Greece were "pretty bleak". She said the Greek people could either vote for a deal which would take "months and months of protracted talks" or they could vote to leave the Euro.

    Quote Message

For Europe to have Greece in social-economic turmoil, on the southern part of Europe, is not a good place to be."

  12. 'Indirect risks' of Greece exitpublished at 11.43

    The Daily Politics

Louis Cooper also said there were "indirect risks" involved in Greece leaving the euro. She said there was a fear that if Greece left, other indebted countries, such as Spain and Italy, might think about coming out of the euro as well.

  13. Greece exit 'very close'published at 11.42

    The Daily Politics

In a Daily Politics discussion on Greece a little earlier, financial commentator Louise Cooper said the country was "very close" to an exit from the euro. She said the decision of the Greek government to hold a referendum on its international creditors' terms for a new bailout had been "a complete surprise" and it had made Eurozone finance ministers "furious".

  14. 'Intelligent way'published at 11.33

    The Daily Politics

Earlier, Crispin Blunt - who has been elected as the new chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee - told the Daily Politics it was necessary to deal with extremism domestically on a "number of different levels". He said it was important to find an "intelligent way" to take on extremist ideology, saying there was a "battle for the hearts and minds" of Sunni Muslims. The best people to lead this were Sunni Islam's "thought leaders" , he suggested.

    The Daily Politics

    The Daily Politics

    Crispin Blunt

Crispin Blunt, chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, has been speaking about criticisms of the response by the Consular and Foreign Office to the Tunisian beach attack.

    Quote Message

People's expectations are perhaps too inflated of what can practically be delivered in terms of response and guidance and everything else when you're dealing with people who have been killed and wounded and are in hospital in bathing costumes with no identity."
