  3. 'Real alternative'published at 17:50

Dave Prentis, general secretary of Britain's second largest union, Unison, has described Jeremy Corbyn's election as Labour leader as a "really great day". He said people had rallied behind Mr Corbyn because he provided a real alternative:

    Quote Message

People want to have a vision, they want a political party that's got vision, not just concerned about mechanics. They want a party that's honest and says 'we don't believe in privatisation', rather than saying, 'we believe in less privatisation'... What he's doing is giving a real alternative that people can stand behind."

David Cameron has vowed to "stamp out" anti-Semitic attacks, in a message to mark the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah. In a video message, the prime minister said:

    Quote Message

As Jewish communities unite in prayer across the world, thoughts will turn to the tragic loss of life that we have seen following a number of horrific and abhorrent anti-Semitic attacks over the past year... Jewish communities will not be left to live in fear. As prime minister I will do everything I can to stamp out such hatred now and in the future."

  7. Top tips for shadow cabinet (2/2)published at 17:12

Some more thoughts from our reporter Jack Evans:

    Chi Onwurah

There are strong indications relative unknown Chi Onwurah, above, has been offered the Business, Innovation and Skills post. If true, she will have the big challenge of speaking for Labour at the dispatch box tomorrow on the Trade Union bill.

    Who else could feature?

    The Corbynistas

Jeremy Corbyn has three main allies amongst the PLP; Richard Burgon, Clive Lewis and Cat Smith. Lewis ruled himself out yesterday; Cat Smith has been touted as a potential shadow chief secretary and Richard Burgon as a potential shadow justice minister. Other members of the left who could be heading for senior positions; Lisa Nandy, who is currently shadow minister to the cabinet office, Jon Trickett, who had a key role in Ed Miliband’s policy team and Diane Abbott, who has been talked about in recent days as a potential replacement for Burnham at health.

    Ones to watch….

Caroline Flint is yet to rule herself out and told the BBC yesterday she was “open to discussions with the new leadership” about her future role. Should Burnham turn down shadow home could this be a big beefy portfolio for one of the last remaining Blairites? Shadow leader of the House of Commons will also be a good fit for Ms Flint, insulating her from potential policy disagreements over education, health or defence policy.

    Chuku Umunna
    Image caption,

Could Chuka Umunna be tempted by a top job?

    Definitely out

Yvette Cooper, Chris Leslie, Shabana Mahmood, Rachel Reeves, Tristram Hunt, Emma Reynolds are all out.

One big name whose future isn’t confirmed; Chuka Umunna. Could he be brought back into the fold if offered a major position? He has indicated his passion for European issues over the past couple of months. If offered shadow foreign would he be tempted to accept?

    Continuity

Another major theme of the shadow cabinet will be continuity. Rosie Winterton will be remaining as chief whip whilst Chris Bryant is willing to stay on in the shadow cabinet. He has been covering the Culture portfolio over the past coming months and was a key ally with Tom Watson over phone hacking. Ian Murray has to stay on as shadow Scottish secretary as the sole remaining Scottish Labour MP.

Many Ed Miliband shadow cabinet members are waiting by their phones; Lucy Powell, Vernon Coaker, Michael Dugher are all waiting to see what positions they are offered before making a decision.

  8. Top tips for shadow cabinet (1/2)published at 16:55

Jeremy Corbyn is currently holed up in the Palace of Westminster deciding on the shape of his new shadow cabinet. BBC Political reporter Jack Evans looks at who might take some of the top jobs:

    Shadow chancellor

    Angela Eagle vs John McDonnell

If appointed, Angela Eagle would be the first female shadow chancellor and the most senior woman in the UK Labour Party. Ms Eagle is shadow leader of the House of Commons and served as a Treasury minister during the Brown years. One thing stands in her way; veteran Labour leftwinger John McDonnell. He is best friends with Mr Corbyn and it is thought he was promised the top job some time ago. Will Mr Corbyn sacrifice his best friend for party unity?

    Shadow foreign secretary

Hilary Benn is almost guaranteed to remain shadow foreign secretary…if he wants it. He’s sceptical on the need for military action in Syria and has impressed at the dispatch box since taking over the brief in May.

    Shadow home secretary

Andy Burnham is considering his position and will wait to see what he is offered. Should Mr Benn stay at foreign, this will be the one big job that would be available should he want to move away from the health brief; a position he’s held on and off for six years.

    Shadow justice secretary

Twitter is awash with speculation that Emily Thornberry, of "flag-gate" fame, is in the frame for the justice brief. It will be a big turnaround for her career after being sacked by Ed Miliband for carelessly tweeting a picture of an England flag outside a council house in Rochester.

  10. 'Argue your case'published at 16:43

    Paul KennyImage source, AFP

Sir Paul Kenny, leader of the GMB union, says that if figures within the Labour Party are going to simply snipe at Jeremy Corbyn "the best thing they can do is go". But he said he would rather people "stay and argue their case".

    Quote Message

I am not asking people to do that - I want them to stay and argue their case. I am not asking for them to be thrown out."

  11. Nominating Corbyn 'the right thing to do'published at 16:25

The Labour MP, Andrew Smith - whose last minute nomination enabled Jeremy Corbyn to contest the leadership - has been defending his decision as the "right thing to do" in the interests of democracy.

Mr Smith - who represents Oxford East - told the BBC he didn't expect Mr Corbyn to win at the start. However, he said he began to detect the beginning of what he called the "phenomenon" of people wanting a more radical change.

    Quote Message

It is a political earthquake and the margin of his victory was breathtaking, and I think it's a clear signal that all of us in politics - not just in the Labour party - need to listen as to why it is there's this upsurge of people wanting more radical policies and who frankly are fed up with the poorest in the society being asked to pay the cost of the mistakes that were caused by the bankers."

    Nicola SturgeonImage source, AFP

The other big political story of the day is in Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed the SNP will set out the timescale for a possible second referendum on independence in its manifesto for next year's Scottish Parliament election.

BBC Scotland's political correspondent Glenn Campbell has been analysing what would need to happen:

    Quote Message

Ms Sturgeon does not want to hold another referendum unless she is sure of winning. That means that opinion polls would need to be consistently suggesting majority support for independence. Ms Sturgeon thinks this is more likely to happen if the new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is unable to establish himself as a prime minister in waiting."

Stephen Kinnock - son of former Labour leader Neil - has said he "welcomes Jeremy Corbyn’s promise of big conversation" on policy.

Could he be a candidate for the shadow cabinet? The new Aberavon MP says his "top priority is to get [his] feet firmly planted into [his] constituency and to be a highly effective MP."
