  9. UK to 'step up' support for refugeespublished at 19:54

    Justine Greening

The Department for International Development has released further details about additional funding for the refugee crisis being provided by the UK.

DfID says it will "step up" with nearly £115m in additional emergency funding. This includes the £100m announced earlier by David Cameron and £14.5m to provide aid in countries that refugees and migrants are travelling through. For example, £4m will go towards helping refugees in Greece and Italy.

The department points out that the new funding of £100m brings the UK's response to the Syria crisis up to £1.12bn – second only to the US.

The International Development Secretary Justine Greening said:

    Quote Message

Once again the UK is leading the way in meeting the most immediate, basic needs of hundreds of thousands of Syrians caught up in this conflict.

With the chancellor's spending review two months away, the magazine for civil servants - Civil Service World, external - today takes a look at what's going on behind the scenes in the run-up to George Osborne's big announcements on 25 November.

The magazine wonders whether the Department of Health has got the Treasury "over a barrel" during the current spending negotiations.

A former Treasury official tells CSW that:

Time for a look back at the main stories of the day..

David Cameron arrived in Brussels for a meeting of EU leaders about the migrant crisis. He promised an extra £100m to support refugees living in camps in countries next to Syria. European countries are thrashing out how best to resettle the refugees.

The new Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron made his first keynote speech to his party's conference in Bournemouth. In a punchy and well-received address, Mr Farron says his mission is to get the Lib Dems back into power.

Mr Farron also criticised David Cameron's handling of the refugee crisis and called on the government to opt in to the EU plan to "take our share of the refugees".

With the Labour Party conference beginning on Sunday, the New Statesman has published a wide-ranging interview with the new party leader Jeremy Corbyn. Mr Corbyn says he wants to scrap the welfare cap.

And the Chancellor, George Osborne, has become the first UK minister to visit Xinjiang province, in north-west China. Campaigners have urged him to raise concerns about the treatment of the province's Muslim Uighur minority.

  15. Helping councils to help refugees...published at 17:23

    Clive BettsImage source, Labour Party

As the first Syrian refugees start to arrive in the UK, Clive Betts - Labour chair of the Commons local government committee - is seeking clarification about funding for local councils.

Clive Betts has written to the Communities and Local Government Secretary, Greg Clark asking about apparently  contradictory statements about funding coming from Cabinet Ministers.

He says Mr Clark suggested government help would run for at least five years while the Home Secretary Theresa May stated that government funding was only guaranteed for the first year.

    Clive Betts says:

    Quote Message

The refugee crisis is an urgent problem and the Government needs to spell out far more clearly what support they are going to provide to local authorities who will bear the additional schooling, healthcare and housing costs."

The BBC's political editor has been assessing Tim Farron's speech and the task ahead for the new Lib Dem leader. You can read Laura's full piece here.

Here's an extract to give a flavour of it:

    Quote Message

It was not so much, 'go back to your constituencies and prepare for government', David Steel's ill-fated and premature command to his party in 1981. But more like, 'go back to your constituencies and prepare to put this party back together piece by piece, ward by ward, council by council'."
