    Quote Message

With the election of a new Labour leader, our people are hearing, for the first time in a decade, a message of hope."

And on the subject of Britain's nuclear weapons programme, he questions "how on earth can we justify renewing Trident at £20bn when adult social care for the elderly is in collapse. It just cannot happen".

  9. Jarvis criticises McDonnell on IRApublished at 14:10

    Brian Wheeler

Labour MP Dan Jarvis, a former soldier who served in Northern Ireland, says shadow chancellor John McDonnell's previous comments on the IRA "didn't sit comfortably with me".

Mr Jarvis said the shadow chancellor had "clarified" remarks, made in 2003, that IRA members should be "honoured".

But he told a fringe meeting politicians had to be "mindful" of "the impact of the words we use" had on the families of victims.

On a recent edition of Question Time, Mr McDonnell said the comments had clearly caused offence and apologised "from the bottom of my heart".

The new shadow defence secretary, Maria Eagle, has given her first interview. Ms Eagle backs Trident renewal, in contrast to Jeremy Corbyn. She says she was "really proud" to take on the role, and told Mr Corbyn of her views on the subject. He asked her to "facilitate a debate", she adds, saying people want to see the issue "openly and transparently debated". But what will happen if the decision is taken to oppose Trident, she is asked - will she resign?

    Quote Message

Let's have the debate, let's see what happens, and at the appropriate stage something will probably have to give one way or another."

At the end of the debate, she says, "people like me or Jeremy or whatever will make their decisions on the basis of what comes out".

Hilary Benn is also asked about the leadership's stance on the UK's place in the EU. He says he agrees with Jeremy Corbyn that workers' rights should not be watered down, but adds that "the answer to that is not to walk away".

  13. 'No magic solution'published at 13:56

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

On Jeremy Corbyn's favoured "people's quantitative easing" economic strategy, shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn says:

    Quote Message

As we have learned, there is no magic solution but we should have an open mind in politics to the steps that can be taken."

  14. 'More to spell out'published at 13:55

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Paul Johnson tells the World at One that, to balance the books "you either need very significant spending cuts" or "some really, really big tax increases".

He adds that John McDonnell has "a lot more to spell out".

  15. IFS reaction to McDonnnellpublished at 13:52

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

What does the Institute for Fiscal Studies make of John McDonnell's speech to the Labour conference? IFS director Paul Johnson says there was nothing "terribly specific" in the shadow chancellor's speech, though there was "quite a lot of nodding towards things or directions he would like to take".

A desire to "significantly raise taxes on other people" shone through, Mr Johnson says, adding:

    Quote Message

To make what he's saying balance, that's a significantly large amount of taxes in there."

  16. Minister: 'Unwelcome blow' for Redcarpublished at 13:50

James Wharton, minister with responsibility for the Northern Powerhouse, says the pause in production at Redcar is "an unwelcome blow" that will cause "significant problems" for those affected.

The Conservative MP says the government has been working closely with owners SSI over the past month and has provided what support it can "and yet sadly we've not been able to find a solution to keep it open".

He stresses that it's a mothballing, not a hard closure, meaning there's potential it could come back if the market conditions improve. He rejects calls for it to be nationalised, saying it would not be the right thing to do.

Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar and shadow civil society minister, responds to the news that iron and steelmaking at SSI's plant in the north-east of England is to be mothballed, with the loss of 1,700 jobs. She tells the World at One the news is absolutely "devastating".

    Quote Message

What is the Northern Powerhouse if it's not preserving an industry like this which is fundamental to the British economy?"

  18. CBI: More detail neededpublished at 13:28

Responding to John McDonnell's conference speech, the CBI concludes that the shadow chancellor was "strong on intent but has not yet provided great detail on how he intends to deliver his plans".

    Quote Message

The overall impression of this speech was of rather more intervention in the world of business and the economy. What’s clear to us is that you can’t be pro-growth and pro-jobs without being pro-business. And a thriving private sector is essential for raising living standards and paying for high-quality public services."

  20. 'Today is about a new discourse' - Malhotrapublished at 13:12

    The Daily Politics

    Daily Politics

Asked about a financial transaction tax, which Labour is said to be considering, Seema Malhotra tells the Daily Politics the party would not introduce one without global agreement.

"Today is about a new debate and a new discourse," she adds.

The shadow chief secretary to the Treasury is also asked to clarify the party's position on people's QE, which featured heavily in Jeremy Corbyn's campaign.

She says it would only be used at the right time of the economic cycle, when "it wasn't going to be inflationary".
