  4. Cameron on immigrationpublished at 07:47

    BBC Breakfast

    David Cameron

The prime minister has told BBC Breakfast he was “incredibly proud” that Britain had built one of the “most successful multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracies anywhere in the world”.

Mr Cameron stressed some of the benefits of immigration, but said he agreed with the Home Secretary, Theresa May, that the numbers of people coming to the UK need to be controlled.

Theresa May will warn in her conference speech today of the dangers of uncontrolled immigration. Mr Cameron said Mrs May “has been an excellent home secretary” and that she was making the point that unless immigration is at an appropriate rate “it becomes difficult to create the cohesive, integrated society we want to see”.

Mr Cameron added if you want an integrated, successful society you have to make sure there are enough school places and that hospitals aren't overcrowded. He said  “you can’t have it both ways”.
