  4. Cameron: Our values will prevailpublished at 21:55

The prime minister concludes his speech by referring to the "Blitz spirit" which the British people showed when they came under lengthy and persistent attack during World War Two, noting his predecessor Sir Winston Churchill's refusal to negotiate with the enemy "however long and hard the toil may be".

    Quote Message

"It is that same resolve that will defeat this terrorism and ensure that the values we believe in - and the values we defend - will again in the end prevail."

  5. Cameron defends 'Jihadi John' actionpublished at 21:47

David Cameron takes a thinly-veiled swipe at Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, saying foreign policy is about building alliances, not "press releases and pious statements in Parliament".

He says it was naive to argue, as Mr Corbyn did, that the British jihadist Mohammed Emwazi, thought to have been killed in a US drone strike on Friday, could have been detained and brought to trial.

There is no legitimate government in Syria to facilitate this, and certainly not in the area controlled by Islamic State where Emwazi was targeted, he added.

  6. PM: We must 'address poisonous narrative'published at 21:32

The more we learn about what happened in Paris, the PM says, the more he is adamant the government's counter-terror approach in recent years is justified.

He says a comprehensive approach to tackling terror is needed, encompassing military force, counter-terror expertise and defeating the "poisonous narrative that is the root cause of this evil".

Mr Cameron says Islamic extremism cannot be explained by poverty, deprivation or foreign interventions in Iraq and other Muslim countries. Instead, he argues, it stems from a "diseased view of the world" and the UK and other countries have to stop "the seed being planted in the minds of young people" by arguing for an alternative philosophy based on the liberal values of compassion, diversity and tolerance.

  7. Cameron: We won't be 'cowed' by attackspublished at 21:30

David Cameron in the City of London

Speaking at the Lord Mayor's banquet at the London Guildhall, David Cameron has said France, the UK and its allies will never be "cowed" by "acts of depravity" like those seen in Paris and will "redouble our resolve" to fight terror in all its forms. He announces increased funding for the security services, fighter aircraft and a doubling of the UK's drone capacity. He also says the international aid budget will be refocused, with half of it targeted on stabilising broken states.
