The British pound fell to close to a two-week low against both the euro and the dollar this morning, with investors selling the currency on expectations that a fresh bout of fiscal austerity in UK will probably keep interest rates lower for longer.

The chancellor sets out the results of the Spending Review - the first since 2010's bonfire of the quango's - in Parliament at 12:30 GMT.

He is expected to announced plans for deep spending cuts in government and welfare as part of a strategy to turn the current budget deficit into a surplus by the end of the decade.

But plans for more fiscal tightening are likely to push back expectations of an interest rate hike.

Sterling fell 0.25% against the euro at 70.715p per euro, having hit a low of 71.80p - its lowest in two weeks earlier in the day. It was flat against the dollar at $1.5084.
