We're hearing from another MP with a constituency at the heart of the Lake District's nuclear industry - Copeland's Jamie Reed. The Labour MP says while other nations have nuclear weapons, "so should we". This is not about "one-upmanship" he adds, saying only a multi-national approach to nuclear disarmament will work.

  4. Trident cost would leave soldiers 'poorly-equipped'published at 14:44

    House of Commons
    Parliament

The SNP's Deidre Brock highlights the cost of Trident (£31bn plus a £10bn contingency according to yesterday's review, to build the submarines alone).

The combined effect of spending cuts and spending billions on renewal, she says, "would leave poorly-equipped frontline service personnel even worse off".

  12. Labour MP brands SNP 'robots'published at 14:23

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Labour MP John Woodcock - who represents Barrow, where Britain's nuclear submarines are built - is taking on the SNP ranks in the Commons, describing them as "robots".

Is this Parliamentary behaviour, asks the SNP's John Nicholson.

Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing says "robots" could be considered derogatory, but says she is sure he meant "high functioning, intelligent" robots.

  15. What do SNP hope to achieve with Trident debate?published at 14;12

    The Daily Politics

MPs on SNP's opposition day debate on nuclear weapons

The SNP's Brendan O'Hara said earlier that his party's opposition day debate on Trident, being debated just now, was "perfectly legitimate", despite not being binding.

Labour's Alan Johnson said only the government vote on the issue would be "meaningful". The MP also insisted the party's position on the issue remained unchanged, despite the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader.

  16. Eagle 'will lead Labour's review'published at 14:03

    House of Commons
    Parliament

    Toby Perkins and Kevan Jones

Mr Perkins stresses that Labour's defence review will be led by (pro-Trident) Maria Eagle, the shadow defence secretary, not (anti-Trident) Ken Livingstone, the former London mayor who has been appointed as the review's co-convener.

Ms Eagle was said to be furious when Mr Livingstone was appointed.

Mr Perkins said it would "clearly be ludicrous" to pretend there were not differences of opinion in the party.

Shadow defence minister Kevan Jones - who clashed with Mr Livingstone last week - is sat directly behind him on the front bench, but Ms Eagle is conspicuous by her absence.

  17. SNP 'inconsistent' on Tridentpublished at 14:00

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Labour's Toby Perkins says there are "a whole series of inconsistencies" about the SNP's position, saying it has failed to explain how it would replace jobs lost if Trident was scrapped and has committed the money that would be saved to a number of different projects. There are cheers as Mr Perkins sets out the current Labour position - that it is committed to Trident renewal. Jeremy Corbyn does, however, have a different view, he says, hence the party's defence policy review.

  18. 'No oohing and aahing' warns deputy Speakerpublished at 13:55

    Eleanor Laing

Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing steps in to stop laughter and mockery from opponents as Toby Perkins makes Labour's response to the SNP Trident motion.

  19. Labour responds to Trident debatepublished at 13:49

    Toby Perkins

Toby Perkins, Labour's shadow defence minister, says the debate comes as his party reviews its policy on Trident. It is "a matter of huge importance for this country" he says, but describes the SNP debate as an "attempt to score cheap political points". Labour does not think it appropriate to take part in the vote, he says.
