    Earlier on, during his Today interview Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said the Labour Party would have a discussion in "the normal way" on whether to back government plans to begin air strikes in Syria.

    He said he was "hoping" there would be a "consensual position".

    Ahead of today's statement from the Prime Minister urging action in Syria, here's a refresher on the conflict so far.

    More than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in four-and-a-half years of armed conflict, which began with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war. 

    More than 11 million others have been forced from their homes as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and those opposed to his rule battle each other - as well as jihadist militants from Islamic State.

    From about !0:30 GMT David Cameron will take to his feet in the Commons and warn of the threat posed by IS to the UK and say the country should not "sub-contract its security" to others.

    A Commons vote is expected within weeks on whether to authorise air strikes.
