  14. 67 Labour MPs with government and 'nine or 10' abstentionspublished at 22:56

    BBC News Channel

BBC political correspondent Vicky Young says 67 Labour MPs voted with the government and "nine or 10 abstained".

It looks like Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn "managed to keep about half his shadow cabinet alongside him", she adds.

As it was a free vote, Vicky says it cannot as such be seen as "a test of Jeremy Corbyn's authority".

  15. Conservative MP praises 'remarkable' speech by Bennpublished at 22:55

    BBC News Channel

Conservative MP Sir Alan Duncan says shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn delivered "one of the most remarkable parliamentary speeches I've heard".

The former minister thinks the SNP "have come out worst today" and claims their MPs' arguments were weak and they did not sound "serious" on national defence.

  16. Laura Kuenssberg analysis: Cameron achieves his goalpublished at 22:54

    Laura Kuenssberg
    BBC political editor

David Cameron has achieved his long-held goal.

Intervening against the extremist forces who call themselves the Islamic State in Syria - it seemed impossible less than a month ago.

But in the weeks since the Paris attacks, the prospect of extending bombing strikes into Syria from Iraq has taken on a reluctant inevitability.

Planes may be dropping bombs by tonight.

But for the prime minister, with this, his third big foreign intervention - Libya, Iraq, now Syria - pulling together a wider plan to achieve real peace is a far more complex task, one he acknowledges the UK cannot complete on its own.

Yet by choosing action, that's a task he faces new pressure to help deliver.

For Labour too though the months ahead will be wracked with tensions that have been wound even tighter by the last few days' events.

The decision to take military action is never taken lightly.

But its political consequences could be heavy indeed.

Pass one political test, another immediately follows.

  17. Hammond: Very pleased about number of Labour MPs voting in favourpublished at 22:50

    BBC Newsnight

Speaking after the vote on Syria air strikes, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond says he's "very pleased that a significant number of Labour MPs voted with us to degrade this terrorist organisation".

“Britain is safer because of the actions taken by MPs today." he adds.

“We will see this operational as soon as practical but we won’t give a running commentary about how these operations are progressing.”

    Quote Message

There were all sorts of debates going on today. What I would say to members who didn’t vote tonight is to think carefully about the arguments put forward tonight, about the multi-strand approach we are taking in Syria. We are doing the right thing. Military strikes alone won’t help Syria, won’t keep us safe from Daesh. But this multi-strand approach will.”

    BBC Newsnight

    Quote Message

I thought Hilary Benn’s speech was very good, I haven’t heard him give a speech like that before. It (the speech) was mainly to his own colleagues pleading with them not to abandon Labour’s long held tradition of internationalism”
