  8. PM's air strikes case 'doesn't stand up to examination' - Salmondpublished at 09:12

    BBC News Channel

    Alex Salmond

The SNP opposes military action in Syria. The party's foreign affairs spokesman, Alex Salmond, has told the BBC he's "not convinced" by the government's case for air strikes.

Noting the cross-party amendment against military action, he says it's backed by Foreign Affairs Committee member and Tory MP John Baron, and MPs from six political parties in the House of Commons. "And there isn't a single terrorist sympathiser" among them, he adds - in a rebuke to David Cameron over remarks he made last night.

He says the PM has had to resort to "desperate language" because "he knows his support is starting to slip away", and accuses the PM of trying to rush the vote this week.

What happens after air strikes in Syria?

Much of the discussion on action in Syria has focused on the strategy for stabilising and rebuilding the region after any military offensive.

The UK, US, Russia and others have agreed on a number of points, including improving access to humanitarian aid and helping to launch a new political process.

But so far there has been no agreement on the future of the country’s president, Bashar al-Assad.

    BBC Monitoring

Iran's official English-language Press TV channel highlights a poll as showing Britain "divided" over bombing Syria, with 54% in England backing the move and 72% in Scotland opposing it, BBC Monitoring reports.

Its morning bulletins also note Tuesday's anti-bombing demonstration by the Stop the War Coalition, and refer to the US-led bombing campaign as "lacking authorisation" from either the UN or the Syrian government.

Iran's rolling news channel IRINN reports the demonstration, while Arab satellite TV channels and the press in the Middle East in general devote little attention to the story.
