  10. James Landale despatch on Conservative bullying inquirypublished at 18:15

Script from Radio 4's Six O'Clock News report

    Quote Message

For days now the Conservative Party has been submerged in allegations of bullying, blackmail and sexual harassment in its youth wing. At the centre of the allegations is a former campaigner called Mark Clarke. He's accused of bullying a young activist called Elliott Johnson who died in September after apparently taking his own life. Mr Clarke has been expelled from the Conservative Party for life but denies any wrongdoing. The Conservatives had been conducting their own inquiry into the allegations but the father of the dead man, Ray Johnson, said there should be an independent investigation. So today the party's ruling board placed the whole affair in the hands of the law firm Clifford Chance. Tory officials will no longer be involved and the whole process will be reviewed by an independent QC Lord Pannick. The final report will be published and there'll be a wider review of the party's governance procedures. The question is whether this will be enough to save the Conservative Party chairman, Lord Feldman. Several Tory MPs - and Ray Johnson - have said the peer should resign for allowing a culture of intimidation to exist within the party. Lord Feldman's former co-chairman, Grant Shapps, stepped down as a minister at the weekend after admitting that he had ignored objections about Mr Clarke's behaviour. Today the chancellor George Osborne defended Lord Feldman as an outstanding party chairman and a person of real integrity."

  13. 'We need more time to consider Syria strikes'published at 17:55

Tom Watson, deputy leader of the Labour Party, has written to the Prime Minster to ask for more time to consider the issue of Syrian air strikes.

Mr Watson is sympathetic to the idea of supporting military action.

He says in his letter: "I do not believe you've given proper time to build consensus. As Jeremy Corbyn has made clear, parliament needs more time to make a considered decision on air strikes in Syria."

  14. David Cameron: Stop making excuses and take action on climate changepublished at 17:50

    David Cameron

David Cameron is speaking at the UN Climate Summit in Paris.

He says countries such as the UK are "thriving" despite having legally binding climate change agreements. He asks how future generations would accept a lack of action being taken.

He says: "They will ask us was it really too difficult to agree to a mechanism to measure and verify what you all signed up to?"

    Quote Message

All I am saying is that, instead of making excuses tomorrow to our children and grandchildren, we should be taking action against climate change today. What we're looking at is not difficult it is doable, and therefore we should come together and do it."

  15. Labour MP compares David Cameron with Hitlerpublished at 17:40

    Sean Curran
    Parliamentary correspondent

Labour MP Paul Flynn has compared David Cameron with Adolf Hitler over the prospects of military action in Syria. During a hearing of the Public Administration Committee, he said:

    Quote Message

Adolf Hitler in his final days ordered his general of the 12th Army to come in rescue him from his bunker because the Red Army were approaching. It's been said that not since then has a European leader been so deluded about a phantom army as the Prime Minister was last week when he invented this army of 70,000."

Last week, as he set out the case for extending air strikes against the so-called Islamic State group into Syria, the PM said there 70,000 "moderate" Free Syrian Army and Kurdish fighters on the ground who would be able to take and hold territory from IS.

Paul Flynn's comments were directed at Cabinet Office Minister Matthew Hancock who told the Labour MP:

    Quote Message

I don't think it's reasonable or sensible to describe decisions being made by the prime minister in a way that correlates them to any decision made by Adolf Hitler."

  18. Cancelled operations will not go ahead even if strike is called offpublished at 17:27

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Taking questions from the Commons about junior doctor strikes, Jeremy Hunt the health secretary, was asked if cancelled operations will take place if the planned strike for tomorrow is called off?

    He replies:

    Quote Message

Sadly I fear in the majority of cases, even if the strike is called off, which I hope it is, it will be too late to re-book people in tomorrow. We, in the NHS, will do everything we can to re-book people in as quickly as we can."
