However, he asks people to think "about the political culture that we have in this country and how we nurture a kinder culture".

On the subject of MPs' safety, he says: "I think we're all aware of our vulnerability." He adds that he was attacked physically during the debate on hunting a few years ago.

He suggests that "appointment-only surgeries" are a good security precaution, but rejects any notion that MPs "drive around in armoured convoys", claiming: "That's what happens in dictatorships."

    Eleanor Garnier

During a normal session in the Commons, MPs from the governing party sit on one side of the House, with opposition parties facing them on the other.

However, says BBC political correspondent Eleanor Garnier, there is speculation that MPs might not sit according to party loyalties when the Commons is recalled on Monday.

The idea, Eleanor says, would be "to actually have MPs mixed up to really show the unity that we saw earlier with David Cameron and Jeremy Corbyn".

Long before she became an elected politician, Jo Cox had built a successful career fighting human suffering in the charity sector.

Eight years working for Oxfam - where she met her husband - enabled her to show inspiring leadership and political intelligence, despite her remarkably young age, her former colleagues recall.

Oxfam's Max Lawson described her campaigning to end the conflict in Darfur as "particularly brilliant" and added: "She was as a ball of energy, always smiling, full of new ideas, of idealism, of passion."
