    BBC News Channel

The deadline for people to register as supporters and take part in the Labour leadership election - for a £25 fee - passed at 17:00 BST.

The option to register was available for 48 hours to non-members and those who joined the party after 12 January 2016.

BBC political correspondent Iain Watson says there were signs of a "late surge" as the deadline approached "but Labour have stuck to their guns and closed the website".

Despite the much higher fee, Iain says, there a signs that more people have registered this year than before last year's contest, when the fee was just £3. Eight out of 10 of those who registered as supporters in the 2015 contest backed Jeremy Corbyn for the leadership, he adds.
