    Sean Curran and Lord Kinnock

MPs have disappeared for their summer recess. Parliament is almost deserted and there is just the distraction of the Brexit fall-out, a new government and a Labour leadership election to keep Lobby correspondents in business.

With no-one having resigned for days, you may want to fill that politics-shaped hole in your life by catching up on a fascinating Neil Kinnock interview with my BBC Westminster colleague Sean Curran.

In the interview, Lord Kinnock looks back on his upbringing as the son of a miner and district nurse ("a sort of sheriff of north Tredegar" as her son puts it). He joined Labour (against the rules) just before his 15th birthday.

He tells of his unhappiness at Lewis School, Pengam, despite its reputation for educational excellence.

  7. 'I'd set the right tone for UKIP', pledges leadership challenger Lisa Duffypublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    Lisa DuffyImage source, PA

Lisa Duffy has launched her bid to be the next leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party.

The contest has been sparked by Nigel Farage's decision to stand down after the UK vote to leave the EU, saying his political ambition had been achieved.

Pitching to be his successor, Ms Duffy - a councillor - said she would put an end to party in-fighting and set the "right tone" as leader. "I'm not a faction. I'm actually somebody that builds teams," she said.

Setting out her priorities, she said UKIP needed to have "a positive, modernised vision for British Islam", to protect the NHS and "stay hard on law and order".

The leadership challenger also defended ex-deputy chairwoman Suzanne Evans, who is currently suspended from the party, saying she had been "treated unfairly".

Ms Evans this week announced she had given up hope of being UKIP leader, blaming a "handful of people at the top" of the party for preventing her by way of her suspension - and threw her weight behind Ms Duffy's candidacy.

    Owen Smith

Owen Smith is asked if he would support Jeremy Corbyn's nomination by MPs, if the court challenge to the Labour leader's automatic inclusion on the ballot succeeds.

The leadership challenger says he does not envisage being in that situation but would want Mr Corbyn in the contest if the court rules against his automatic inclusion.

It would "up to other MPs" to decide whether to nominate Mr Corbyn under those circumstances, he adds.

  12. Owen Smith on 'impact' of immigrationpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    #BBCAskThis

    BBC News Channel

Asked about immigration, Labour leadership challenger Owen Smith says he will not "play in to some of this intolerant language" that he says was used by some in the referendum Leave campaign.

However, he argues that migration has had "a real impact" on jobs and wages in some parts of the country.

He backs a migration fund to support public services in areas of high immigration.

"I fear the party might split if Jeremy stays," Owen Smith says.

He tells the BBC that Mr Corbyn has "helped us rediscover a bit of our radicalism" but can't win an election.

Pointing to polls that give the Conservatives a substantial lead over Labour, he adds:

    Quote Message

If Theresa May calls a snap election... it's going to be incredibly difficult for Labour to win at the moment."

  14. Owen Smith: Right that Jeremy Corbyn is automatically on ballotpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    #BBCAskThis

    BBC News Channel

Labour leadership challenger Owen Smith says the party's National Executive Committee made the "right decision" to put Jeremy Corbyn's name on the leadership ballot.

The NEC's ruling that the incumbent did not have to secure the nominations of 50 MPs - which Mr Smith, as challenger, did - is the subject of a legal challenge by a Labour donor.

Mr Smith tells the BBC that Labour members would be "really angry" if the court "interfered" with the leadership election process. He hopes that the court will not uphold the challenge.
