  13. Jeremy Corbyn warns of 'second class schooling for the many'published at 12:24 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Jeremy Corbyn quotes chief inspector of schools Sir Michael Wilshaw's criticism of grammar schools, before claiming that the government's plans address "none of the crises" facing the schools system in England, listing cuts to budgets, oversized classes and a teacher recruitment and retention crisis as examples.

"The government is heading backwards to a failed segregation for the few and a second class schooling for the many," he adds.

But the PM says Mr Corbyn has "got some of his facts wrong", arguing that there are more teachers in schools today than in 2010, when the Tories came to power.

She again says that Mr Corbyn has opposed all the government's education reforms.

  16. Theresa May accuses Labour of 'stifling opportunity'published at 12:20 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

    House of Commons
    Parliament

The Labour leader asks the PM to confirm whether existing grammar schools will be instructed to widen their admissions policy? Theresa May says the government wants to make sure that all grammars provide opportunities to a "wide range" of pupils.

"I believe in the education that is right for every child. It is Labour that has stifled opportunity and ambition in this country," she adds.

And she accuses Labour MPs of taking advantage of a good education themselves but "pulling up the ladder" for everyone else.

Mr Corbyn says Mrs May was unable to answer his question. He says investment is needed in all schools "not this selection at the age of 11".

  17. Attainment gap at selective schoolspublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

    Reality Check

Theresa May has just repeated her claim that the attainment gap between rich and poor IN selective schools is virtually zero.

Reality Check looked at this claim last week.

In 2015, there was a smaller gap in selective schools at GCSE between children eligible for free school meals and those not eligible for free school meals than there was in England as a whole. But there was still a gap. Whether that gap counts as "almost zero" is a matter of opinion.

  18. Jeremy Corbyn: Children should not be segregatedpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

    House of Commons
    Parliament

"I know (Jeremy Corbyn) believes in equality of outcome. I believe in equality of opportunity. He believes in levelling down, we believe in levelling up."

But Jeremy Corbyn says that equality of opportunity "is not segregating children at the age of 11", as he goes on to raise concerns over the government's plans.

Mrs May says there is currently selection in the schools system - "by house price". She also seeks to "gently" remind Mr Corbyn that he went to a grammar school, as she did.

  19. PM defends grammar school planspublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 14 September 2016

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Theresa May says the government's education reforms over the past six years have improved school standards - but she says Jeremy Corbyn has opposed them all. The PM says she wants to see "a diversity of education provision" to see "opportunity for all".

The Labour leader, in reply, asks why she wants to expand a system "that can only let children down?

Mrs May tells Mr Corbyn "he needs to stop casting his mind back to the 1950s".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is on his feet, and pays tribute to the police constable stabbed on duty yesterday. He also extends his best wishes to David Cameron and hopes the Witney by-election will concentrate "on the issues of education and his views on selection" - an apparent dig at Theresa May's plans for grammar schools.

Continuing the education theme, he congratulates her on uniting people against her plans and asks Mrs May to name any educational experts who back her plans to expand new grammar schools.
