The party then debated Europe and voted in favour of holding a referendum on any eventual deal the government comes forward with on the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union.

  3. Clegg predicts 'hard Brexit' by Theresa May's governmentpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 19 September 2016

    Sean Curran
    Parliamentary correspondent

The former Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, has predicted that Theresa May's government will move towards what he called a "hard Brexit" which will see the UK leave the European Union and the single market.

The former deputy prime minister told his party's annual conference that there was a paralysis at the heart of the Conservative government and said: "That is why they find themselves up this Brexit creek... Never mind without a paddle - they don't have a canoe, they don't have a map - they have absolutely no clue whatsoever."

Mr Clegg suggested that, "under pressure from their more swivel-eyed backbenchers" the Conservatives would "move remorselessly towards a hard Brexit".

He gave a warning that if the UK left the European Union and the single market as well, it would do "untold damage to the British economy".

He said if the Conservatives undid what he called "an extraordinary British achievement - the creation of the world's largest borderless marketplace anywhere" then they would never be able to say again that they were the party of business or a responsible party of government.

Mr Clegg was given a standing ovation by party members, some of whom waved EU flags, at the end of his speech.

"Brexit is casting us into an economic storm," says Lib Dem Treasury spokeswoman Baroness Kramer.

Continuing with the metaphors, she says the government's economic management means "we are sailing on a raft that is essentially made of twigs".

She adds: "Three have fallen off the raft: Osborne, Cameron, Gove. I have to say Boris has a certain natural buoyancy."

Neil Coyle was parliamentary private secretary to the shadow leader of the House of Commons until he resigned.

Speaking after Mr Corbyn said he wanted to reach out to MPs, Mr Coyle told the Today programme that he was still waiting for an apology after being included on a list of MPs accused of "abuse" towards the Labour leader.

  9. Referendum on Brexit terms 'not a re-run' of June vote, says peerpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 19 September 2016

Lib Dem peer Baroness Ludford says the motion being debated is not a call for a re-run of June's EU referendum.

A number of delegates have voiced opposition to a second referendum on those grounds.

"We are asking people to vote for the first time on the terms of a Brexit deal," the former MEP says.

Conference delegates vote to pass the motion.

Larry the Downing Street cat received medical attention over the summer following reports of a bitter feud between him and the Foreign Office cat, Palmerston.

Pawing - er, poring - through written questions to the government, we notice that Conservative peer Lord Blencathra has enquired why the costs of vet treatment were met by donations from staff, and whether those staff will be refunded.

Cabinet Office spokesperson Baroness Chisholm of Owlpen has come back with a response, saying the costs were met by voluntary staff donations "due to their affection for Larry".

She adds: "There was no compulsion to donate and no refunds have been requested. The remaining funds will contribute towards the future upkeep of the chief mouser."

    Lord Campbell

Another former Lib Dem leader takes the stage as Menzies Campbell - now Lord Campbell of Pittenweem - addresses the conference EU debate.

He jokes that former party leaders speaking up for the UK's EU membership are "like London buses - when you want one you can't find one and then two come at once".

Lord Campbell argues that the "destabilising" of the EU would work to the benefit of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the UK's leave vote has contributed to this.

"Nick Clegg from Sheffield Hallam," makes his speech in the Lib Dem conference's debate on Europe. The former deputy PM attacks Theresa May's phrase "Brexit means Brexit".

"Have you ever heard a more inane and disingenuous phrase in modern British political discourse?" he asks.

He claims the government does not have "a clue" and will be pressed by "their more swivel-eyed backbenchers" to take the UK out of the single market as well as the EU.

Theresa May will criticise the West's response to the migration crisis when she addresses world leaders later.

At a UN summit in New York, she will say there should be a greater distinction between refugees and people trying to enter a country for economic reasons.

The PM will also say refugees should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and stress that nations have a right to control their borders.

The UN says a record number of people have been displaced by conflict.

Joseph Garcia of the Gibraltar Liberal Party speaks in the Lib Dem conference's debate on the EU.

Voters in Gibraltar backed EU membership by 95.9% to 4.1% in the referendum on 23 June.

Mr Garcia says many people commute from Spain to work in Gibraltar, adding: "Without free movement of people at that border we risk losing half of our entire labour force."

He is followed by former MEP Liz Lynne, who calls for "a parliamentary vote on the terms of the negotiation at least" following the referendum vote to leave the EU.
