  3. Corbyn 'missed devolution opportunity', claims think tankpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

Think tank the Centre for Cities thinks Jeremy Corbyn "missed a prime opportunity to seize the cities and devolution agenda back from the Conservatives".

Chief Executive Alexandra Jones said: "Improving transport and skills, allowing councils to borrow to build more homes, and investing more in research and development would all support growth. But, housing aside, too many of the measures announced today imply a top down, centralised approach, from a national education service to the nationalisation of railways."

    Quote Message

There were no bold policies on devolution, such as enabling city regions to retain local tax revenues for investment – something which many Labour council leaders have called for."

  6. Labour MP wanted 'more on security and defence'published at 17:49 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

Labour MP Stephen Kinnock said Jeremy Corbyn's speech "touched on a number of key issues around the economy... We really sign up to the shift in real growth in investment – he was absolutely right on that."

He added: "One area I would have liked to see a little bit more on is on security and defence. We want to live in a peaceful world but we have to be realistic about how we get there."

He also called on the Labour leader to "reach out" to the party's MPs.

  7. Business network worries that Corbyn is 'reaching for the tax lever'published at 17:48 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

The British Chambers of Commerce says it is concerned about Jeremy Corbyn's proposal to raise corporation tax to help pay for a National Education Service.

"While businesses agree that investment in infrastructure and skills is crucial to the UK's future success, many will be concerned that Jeremy Corbyn is already reaching for the tax lever by asking businesses to pay for his education plans," said acting director general Adam Marshall.

"A competitive business environment requires effective and efficient public spending, reasonable levels of taxation and regulation, as well as great infrastructure and a trained workforce."

    Quote Message

As the Labour Party develops its proposals further, it has to get the balance between these factors right - or risk denting business confidence and investment."

  8. Former shadow ministers' responses to leader's speechpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

Labour MPs gave their reactions to the BBC following the speech.

Former minister John Healey, who was one of those who left Mr Corbyn's top team in June's shadow cabinet revolt, called it a "good" and "clear speech" with "clear vision, very strong on determination to tackle inequality, and rebuild public services".

    Quote Message

We saw a glimpse at the end of what drives him - the real values in the party… And above all a call to the Labour Party to be united and put us on an election footing. That’s what we've got to concentrate all our attention on - winning over the public.

    John Healey, Labour MP

MP Chuka Umunna said the party has to show "a credible economic policy, investing in science and research is absolutely essential" as is "supporting the self-employed".

He added: "It is right we would abolish zero-hours contracts."

    Quote Message

He also talked about need not to ignore the referendum result but to define position on immigration that’s true to our Labour values but addresses real concerns, so that was very encouraging... Immigration has to be about getting numbers down, but it’s not just about the numbers."

Conservative Party chairman Patrick McLoughlin said: "This conference has shown Labour are too divided, distracted and incompetent to build a country that works for everyone."

  16. FSB welcomes recogition of the self-employedpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

The Federation of Small Businesses says it is "delighted the Labour Party has recognised current unfairness around the way the self-employed are treated, and that Jeremy Corbyn has invited us to take part in their review".

    National chairman Mike Cherry said:

    Quote Message

Our research shows that the ranks of the self-employed in our country are rapidly increasing, and are from diverse backgrounds with more women, young and older people and BAME entrepreneurs setting themselves up in business. All parties need to find ways to support this vital and growing sector of the workforce to help them make an even greater contribution to the UK economy."

  17. CBI welcomes R&D investment but worries about corporation taxpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

Following Jeremy Corbyn's speech, CBI deputy director general Josh Hardie said: "With such significant economic challenges ahead, the UK needs a strong opposition firing on all cylinders and providing progressive, practical new ideas.

"The focus on research and development, infrastructure and education is encouraging, but artificially hiking wages and changing corporation tax could be investment dampeners, not drivers.

“Labour is certainly laying out a new way forward and we urge them to iron out inconsistent messages – especially the relationship between state and industry – and clarify policies that are sometimes hard to see delivered and paid for."

    Quote Message

Labour can be reassured that they do have a significant joint agenda with businesses of all sizes, which stand ready to ensure that the opposition's ideas deliver sustainable prosperity across the UK, and avoid the threat of an era of regressive industrial strategy."

  19. UKIP says Labour has an 'addiction to uncontrolled mass immigration'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

UKIP MEP Tim Aker says Jeremy Corbyn's speech had "nothing to offer the millions of decent patriotic Labour supporters who voted Leave and want to see levels of migration brought down".

    He added:

    Quote Message

Several times Corbyn spoke about trust, but how can the voters ever trust Labour again when millions voted on 23 June for control of their borders, yet Labour are determined to keep free the movement of people? The Bank of England has confirmed that free movement of people has driven down wages for the working classes. Labour's addiction to uncontrolled mass immigration makes them no friend to Britain's lowest paid."

Ada Lovelace, regarded as the world's first computer programmer, whoworked with mathematician Charles Babbage in the 1800s.

Alan Turing, amathematician, who conceived modern computing and played a crucial part in the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in WW2 through his code-breaking work at Bletchley Park.
