Eu and UK flags painted on a wall

Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has told a meeting of EU foreign ministers that a post-Brexit UK could follow the example of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) free trade agreement between Canada and the EU.

Garcia-Mallago said: "If the British insist on having the option to restrain the free movement of European workers to the United Kingdom, the only solution is the Canadian one."

The CETA deal has faced stiff opposition in Europe, much like the similar TTIP free trade agreement with the US.

Progress on ratifying CETA is currently stalled after a Belgian parliament in French-speaking Wallonia vetoed it.
