  2. Hillary Clinton concession speechpublished at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has made her concession speech at a New York hotel.

Mrs Clinton said: "I'm sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we share for this country."

She thanked her supporters for  the "vast, diverse, unruly and energised" campaign they had run.

Mrs Clinton said her unsuccessful campaign "wasn't about one person...it was about building an America that's hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted."

She thanked her running mate Virginia senator Tim Kaine, outgoing President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, who campaigned on her behalf.

Mrs Clinton urged her supporters to "never stop believing that to fight for what is right is worth it."

Touching on the subject of feminism that defined much of her presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton addressed the nation's children, saying: "To all the little girls who are watching this: never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams."

Mrs Clinton marked the end of her campaign - and perhaps her political career - with an appeal to the faith of her supporters.

She said: "Let us have faith in each other, let us not grow weary

"There is more work to do."

  12. Nigel Farage: 2016 is the year of political revolutionpublished at 16:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Nigel Farage in Barcelona

Speaking to the BBC,interim UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: "The political revolution of 2016 is that in two massive campaigns the underdogs beat the establishment. We did it in Brexit and Trump did it last night in the USA."

Mr Farage said President Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton had been dismissive of the UK, while Mr Trump understood and valued the special relationship.

He said UK-US relations would be "better under Trump than they could ever be under Clinton".

Asked about the wider trends in politics, Mr Farage said there was a move away from "a type of politics that doesn't recognise the nation state... doesn't recognise the importance of immigration in people's minds".

A member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg has suggested Britons who “feel and wish to be part of the European project” should be able to obtain a form of associate EU citizenship after Brexit.

Under the proposal, nationals of ex-EU countries would be able to keep their rights to live elsewhere in the bloc and vote in European Parliament elections.

Charles Goerens, who belongs to the assembly's Liberal ALDE group, said the scheme would provide a “practical solution for UK citizens aggrieved by Brexit”.

He has tagged an amendment proposing the scheme onto a draft motion on future EU treaty change currently being considered, external by the Parliament’s constitutional affairs committee.

The committee will probably vote on the draft motion later this month, before it is considered by the whole Parliament at a plenary sitting in December.

It is not yet clear how many MEPs will support the idea – although Mr Goerens has claimed that initial talks with his parliamentary colleagues have been “positive”.

In any case, the motion will not be binding on national governments, who would have to agree to change the EU’s treaties to make it a reality.

  18. Trump elected: Media reactionpublished at 15:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    The Guardian

"The unthinkable is only unthinkable until it happens."

That's how The Guardian opens its fatalistic editorial on President-elect Trump.

The paper makes a note of the foreign policy implications of Mr Trump's victory, for Baltic states reliant on Nato and Syrian opposition fighters supported by American air strikes.

The global view dominates its reaction to a future President Trump, with his diplomatic, foreign and trade policies - among others - described as having "the capacity to change the world for the worse."

  19. Hillary Clinton and the US election: What went wrong for her?published at 15:57 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Nick Bryant
    BBC New York Correspondent

    Hillary ClintonImage source, Reuters

This election, surely the most extraordinary in American history, was a revolt against the political establishment.

And few people personify the political establishment more than Hillary Clinton. During this campaign, for millions of angry voters, she became the face of America's broken politics.

Donald Trump managed to persuade enough voters in enough states that he offered a fix. The billionaire cast himself successfully as the ultimate outsider against the ultimate insider. He was the protest candidate. She represented the status quo.

  20. Lawyer raises questions over future UK-US trade relationspublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

Bernardine Adkins, head of EU, trade and competition at UK law firm Gowling WLG, warns "the new Trump world order" may send Britain "back into the arms of the rest of the EU" which she adds needs to reform to accommodate the UK.

    Quote Message

Relief at the UK being at the front of the queue for a US trade agreement may well dissolve as we realise just how far apart the UK is to 'Fortress America' in its approach to free trade. Liam Fox, recently quoted Adam Smith's stance that it was a 'moral right' for people to buy whatever they want from those who sell it to them cheapest. Contrast Trump's rhetoric on dumped steel and the failure of the political classes to act. Ironically, the new Trump world order may well bring us back into the arms of the rest of the EU."

Ms Adkins added that concerns over security, "the fate of Nato with a disengaged US" and "the dissatisfaction of the silent majority at the status quo" is not confined to the Anglo-Saxon world and "may well prove to be a conversation changer".
