    Quote Message

That's all very strong leadership macho stuff. Now I'm not sure what it's based on though. I haven't been told in what way I'm not fit and why I am not fit, which is disappointing.”

  4. How much will Labour's NHS plans cost?published at 15:33 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    Reality Check

Our colleagues at Reality Check have been doing their sums as they look at Labour's plan for the NHS in England if the party wins in June.

This includes a pay increase for staff, putting into law the mandatory minimum number of staff per patient and funding training for health professionals.

Shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth said the money for these pledges would be raised by increasing corporation tax.

But how much will need to be raised and will the tax hike cover the costs?

    Find out here.

  5. Lib Dem David Ward says sacking is 'huge disappointment'published at 15:27 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    David Ward

David Ward - the former Lib Dem MP sacked from standing again as a parliamentary candidate for the party - said he felt "real and deep sadness" over the decision.

Party officials told him he was being kicked out of the seat over alleged anti-Semitic comments and tweets about Saudi Arabia.

    He said:

    Quote Message

The anti-Semitic thing is a nonsense. It's a well-known tactic, how do you avoid conversation or any criticism about Israel? Just say people are anti-Semitic. I am certainly not anti-Semitic.

Mr Ward said his criticism was focused only on the actions of Israel, not Jewish people.

    Quote Message

I would defy anybody to find any comment I have ever made which is not solely related to what Israel is doing. This is all about one thing - let's shut down debate."

Mr Ward said it was a "huge disappointment" that Lib Dem leader Tim Farron had taken the decision to sack him.

Asked why the leader had done this, he replied: "It's the fear of the electoral damage that can be done by being seen to oppose Israel. It's contaminating and infecting our own political system."

  6. Jewish Leadership Council: David Ward's selection was an errorpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

The Jewish Leadership Council, which brings together British Jewish organisations, welcomed Lib Dem leader Tim Farron's decision to sack David Ward as a parliamentary candidate.

    Quote Message

The selection of David Ward for the 2017 general election was an error and rightly criticised by politicians from all parties."

  8. Prime minister branded David Ward's views 'questionable'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    David Ward

At PMQs, Theresa May said voters would be "disappointed" that David Ward had been put forward for re-selection as a Lib Dem candidate in the forthcoming general election.

The prime minister called his views "questionable" during the Commons session. Two hours later, Lib Dem leader Tim Farron announced that Mr Ward had been sacked.

He was suspended by the party in 2013 after questioning the continued existence of the state of Israel but was reinstated in time for him to fight the 2015 election.

  9. Tim Farron sacks Lib Dem candidate David Wardpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

Former Lib Dem MP David Ward has been sacked as a candidate by leader Tim Farron, the party says.

Mr Ward, who has previously faced criticism and was suspended from the party over comments he made about Israel, had been selected to stand for his old seat in Bradford East, which he lost in 2015.

    Mr Farron said:

    Quote Message

"I believe in a politics that is open, tolerant and united. David Ward is unfit to represent the party and I have sacked him."

Labour says Jeremy Corbyn will not take part in a TV debate without Theresa May.

  14. Jeremy Corbyn 'won't do TV debate without May'published at 13:45 British Summer Time 26 April 2017
    Breaking

Prime Minister Theresa May has already ruled out taking part in TV debates during the election campaign - seemingly bringing a very swift end to the tradition which began at the 2010 election.

There had been talk of debates going ahead without Mrs May, but Labour have now suggested that there'll have to be two empty chairs if they go ahead:

    Quote Message

Jeremy will not take part in an opposition leaders' debate. The British people have the right to see a head-to-head debate between the only two people who could form the next Government - and the prime minister's refusal is a sign of weakness, not of strength."

More money for the health service is debated on Radio 4...

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Liberal Democrat peer, Baroness Kramer tells Martha Kearney "more tax money is required" to achieve a sustainable NHS in England.

With regard to a health tax - Conservative MP, Alistair Burt, a former health minister, said the label "doesn't matter", but cites a strong economy "in order to provide the money".

Labour’s elections and campaign coordinator, Sir Andrew Gwynne, said the only way to improve morale in the NHS workforce was to "end the pay cut".

He added that "a detailed costed plan for the NHS" would be in their manifesto.
