Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has criticised Theresa May for refusing to rule out tax rises on income tax and national insurance.

    Quote Message

This is a Conservative government that has given hefty tax cuts to the very, very richest in society, but won't give commitments to working people or to pensioners. And I think that suggests we've got a Tory government that's set to have the wrong priorities which makes it all the more important they don't have a free hand, that we have from Scotland strong voices standing up for Scotland, and standing up for progressive policies."

Labour should be prepared to withdraw candidates in key Green Party target seats, some Labour figures have said.

In a letter to the Guardian, former frontbenchers Clive Lewis and Tulip Siddiq and policy chief John Cruddas urge Labour to give the Greens a clear run in the Brighton Pavilion and Isle of Wight constituencies.

The move follows the Liberal Democrats' decision not to contest Brighton Pavilion, the Greens' sole parliamentary seat, and the Greens' decision not to oppose Labour in a number of areas.

More reaction to the leaked report off differences between Jean-Claude Juncker and Theresa May. The Scottish National Party's minister for UK negotiations with the EU, Michael Russell, said:

    Quote Message

This looming catastrophe shows precisely why Theresa May mustn't be allowed to block the decision of the Scottish Parliament to give people in Scotland a choice over their future when the terms of Brexit are clear. Leaving the EU with no deal - and no agreement on access to the single market - would be an unprecedented act of self-harm which would devastate the UK and Scottish economy. It is absolutely essential that we have a strong opposition at Westminster who can hold this kamikaze Tory leader to account and put the Brexit talks under real scrutiny."

  9. Jeremy Corbyn criticises 'megaphone' diplomacypublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 1 May 2017

The Labour leader has been talking about Theresa May's Brexit negotiations this morning, during a campaign event in London:

    Quote Message

To start negotiations by threatening to walk away with no deal and set up a low tax economy on the shores of Europe is not a very sensible way of approaching people with whom half of our trade is done at the present time. Of course they are going to be difficult (negotiations), but you start from the basis that you want to reach an agreement, you start from the basis that you have quite a lot of shared interests and values. If you start from that basis and show respect, you are more likely to get a good deal. But if you start with a megaphone, calling people silly names, it is not a great start to anything."

The stream of details emerging from a key meeting between Theresa May and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker is likely to become a river, according to BBC Europe correspondent Kevin Connolly. He writes:

Officials in Brussels naturally have a vested interest in stressing that leaving the EU is difficult and dangerous - but there's enough detail in the descriptions of a difficult dinner in Downing Street last week to suggest that there are real problems alongside the tactical manoeuvrings.

It's worth remembering too that all this has come before formal Brexit negotiations have even started - they're likely to get going next month. And every stage is likely to be accompanied by similar leaks and briefings - the only difference is at some point the British are likely to join in too.

  18. May 'sending mixed messages' over Brexitpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 1 May 2017

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has weighed in on the consequences of Theresa May's meeting with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

    Quote Message

She seems to be sending rather mixed messages. To start negotiations by threatening to walk away with no deal and set up a low tax economy on the shores of Europe is not a very sensible way of approaching people with whom half of our trade is done at the present time."

  19. IFS warns against tax triple lockpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 1 May 2017

The Institute for Fiscal studies (IFS) has warned against implementing a tax "triple lock" which the think tank claims could limit "desirable" tax reforms.

In its 2015 manifesto, the Conservatives promised not to raise VAT, income tax and national insurance. So far, the Tories and Labour have both only ruled out raising VAT.

IFS associate director Helen Miller said the tax lock is a "bad policy".

"Constraining the workhorse taxes in this way prevents desirable tax reforms, as we have seen in relation to the taxation of the self-employed, and restricts the policy levers available to deal with any unexpected change in the economy.”

    Tim Farron
    Image caption,

Tim Farron was greeted by current MP Sarah Olney, and former MPs Vince Cable and Ed Davey

Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has accused Theresa May of being "complacent" following claims the Prime Minister told EU officials that she would win the election. As a campaign event in Surbiton, after the launch of the party's battlebus, Mr Farron said he was:

    Quote Message

...concerned at the revelations overnight about Theresa May's complacency... she tells European leaders that she's already won the election - something that will be news to British people - but also about the consequences of no deal whatsoever."

It follows a report by German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) about last Wednesday's meeting between Mrs May and European Commission president Jean Claude Juncker where she allegedly said that she fully expects to be re-elected as prime minister.
