  1. Labour mayor's message for Maypublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    BBC News Channel

Steve Rotheram, Liverpool's new metro mayor, says devolution presents a "golden opportunity" to "address the disconnect that many feel exists with politics and the political process".

And he has a message for Theresa May: "You may have borrowed Labour's language about a country that works for all but how can it when you are hitting areas like ours hardest with cuts?"

Government "austerity measures", are hitting working people, he says, adding that Labour is the only party of social justice.

Mr Rotheram also emphasises "ending the resource dominance of the south" of England.

  4. I'm a local voice, says Glasgow Tory councillorpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Thomas KerrImage source, PA

A 20-year-old elected as a Conservative councillor in a former Labour stronghold of Glasgow, is putting his victory down to opposition to another Scottish independence referendum

Thomas Kerr, 20, says he was "shocked" to win in Shettleston, one of five seats the Tories have picked up so far.

He adds: "When you stand as a candidate for the Conservatives in the east end of Glasgow you don't expect something like this to happen, but I think people recognised I'm a local voice and will stand up for local issues."

Early Labour losses mean it cannot now win another majority in Glasgow after decades in power - but it is not yet clear whether the SNP - currently on 15 seats - will become the biggest party.

The BBC's assistant political editor Norman Smith said Theresa May is managing to pick up seats all over the country, despite seven years of austerity measures from the Conservative Party.

He said the gains were about more than just the Brexit factor or the Theresa May factor - although both were part of it.

    He told BBC News:

    Quote Message

It seems to me that Mrs May has managed to rebrand and de-toxify the Tory party in a way that David Cameron and her predecessors were never quite able to do.

  18. 'Mixed night'published at 13:21 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Labour leader Carwyn Jones

"The Tories had been briefing that they'd be walking into power right across Wales this morning - that simply has not happened. People realise that only Welsh Labour will stand up for Wales and we thank them once again for that trust.

"Despite defying the doom-mongers in places like Cardiff and Flintshire, there is no question it was a mixed night for us and as the true party of Wales we are always more stretched than our opponents.

"We faced strong challenges from all parties, and independents, right across the country. For those who lost their seats, they need to know that they have not campaigned in vain, the battle goes on and we thank them for the incredible service they have given to Welsh Labour and their communities.

"We must now re-focus and fight a general election campaign the same way we always fight elections - with our own Welsh Labour values, huge amounts of hard work and an absolute commitment to stand up for our communities against the Tories."
