    Social care became a key issue of the election - and a major headache for the prime minister - after the Conservative manifesto outlined the party's plans to contain the burgeoning cost of social care in a society with a growing proportion of older people.

    The radical proposals envisage people in England footing the bill for care costs over £100,000 from their estates once they die, but were widely seen as hitting traditional Conservative supporters and dubbed a "dementia tax".

    Theresa May attempted to take some steam out of the issue by saying the bill for any individual receiving care would, in fact, be capped - and flatly denied accusations of a climbdown.

    The other parties' policies on social care - such as Labour's plans to put £8bn more into the system over five years - have hardly got a look in.
