Speaking in Prague following a meeting with the Czech foreign minister, Mr Johnson said: "The prime minister at Florence made it very clear that during the transition period, we will expect the existing rules and regulations to apply. So that's pretty clear."

He added: "I also think we can do it comfortably in two years."

  4. Martin Lewis: How Labour's credit card plan would workpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    BBC Radio 5 live

Personal finance expert Martin Lewis has explained how Labour's plan to cap the amount of interest that can be charged on credit card debt would work.

Martin told 5 live Daily’s Adrian Chiles: "It's a sensible idea. The big problem we have in the credit card market is some people have been locked into credit card debts for a very, very long time. (If you) borrow £3,000 now aged 30 at 17.9%, and you can only afford to pay minimum payments, you'll be 57 before you've cleared it."

    Jon TrickettImage source, bb

The Labour conference afternoon session begins - with a statement on Brexit.

MP Jon Trickett from the party's National Executive Committee tells delegates that Labour needs to stay united.

With the Conservatives "squabbling", he says, Labour should commit to "remaining long-term partners with our neighbours in Europe" and to "set out our Labour objectives, which will then define" negotiating positions with the EU.

Following the statement, conference turns to a debate on workers' rights.

  10. Hammond 'in accord' with two year transitionpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Glenn Campbell
    BBC Scotland Political Correspondent

Away from the Labour conference for a moment, Chancellor Philip Hammond has said he is "entirely in accord" with the government's policy for a Brexit transition period of around two years.

Speaking on a visit to Dundee, Mr Hammond said that the transition would need to be complete before the next general election in 2022.

Asked about reports his advisers thought Boris Johnson's approach to Brexit was "simple-minded", the chancellor said he didn't think Boris Johnson was simple-minded on anything.

Mr Hammond also refused to be drawn into speculation about a future Tory leadership contest. He said Theresa May was the best person to lead the country through Brexit.

  11. Diane Abbott: Trump taking USA back to the 1950spublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Tom Moseley
    Political reporter

Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott has just spoken at a fringe debate about racism, islamophobia and antisemitism.

Among the the issues she identified was the election of US President Donald Trump - saying his "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan was actually about "taking America back to the 1950s" in terms of social attitudes.

She also said the fatal fire in Grenfell Tower was relevant to the debate about racism, saying "marginalised" people had been "dumped" on the estate by Kensington and Chelsea council. There is an "overlap" between racial and class discrimination, she said.

  12. Big business unhappy with McDonnell's planspublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Carolyn Fairbairn, CBI Director-General, said:

    Quote Message

The shadow chancellor’s vision of massive state intervention is the wrong plan at the wrong time. It raises a warning flag over the British economy at a critical time for our country’s future. Forced nationalisation of large parts of British industry will send investors running for the hills, and puts misplaced nostalgia ahead of progressive vision. The CBI looks forward to urgent discussion with the Labour leadership to find better solutions to the shared challenges we face.”

  13. Delegates back manifesto policy on Brexitpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

After a reference back request from a Labour delegate, the conference hall voted on whether they should keep the Brexit policy from the manifesto or change it.

The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of keeping the existing policy on Brexit.

Labour's general election manifesto, external said the party accepted the EU referendum result and "negotiating priorities [would] have a strong emphasis on retaining the benefits of the single market and the customs union".

It continues: "A Labour government will immediately guarantee existing rights for all EU nationals living in Britain and secure reciprocal rights for UK citizens who have chosen to make their lives in EU countries.

"Labour recognises that leaving the EU with ‘no deal’ is the worst possible deal for Britain and that it would do damage to our economy and trade. We will reject ‘no deal’ as a viable option and if needs be negotiate transitional arrangements to avoid a 'cliff-edge’ for the UK economy."

  14. 'Brexit vote ban' shows Labour is divided - ministerpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Steve Baker

Sir Keir Starmer's speech earlier "shows Labour have no plan for Brexit, no interest in controlling our borders and no desire to make the most of the opportunities it will bring", according to Steve Baker, a Brexit minister.

“Their ‘Brexit ban’ on a vote at conference shows just how divided they are." he added.

“The Conservatives are the only party working to make a success of Brexit.”

  17. Labour to 'review' PFI contractspublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Norman Smith
    Assistant political editor

Labour sources say they will "review" all PFI contracts and, if necessary, end existing contracts.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell told the Labour conference: "We'll bring existing PFI contracts back in house."

However it's not clear that ALL existing PFI contracts would be brought back in house.

Bringing any back in house would go further than Labour's previous commitment not to sign any new PFI contracts.

However, Mr McDonnell gave no details on how much buying back PFI contracts would cost or where the money would come from.

Mr McDonnell said PFI contracts were likely to cost the public sector over £200bn over the next few decades - an indication of the size of the sum that would be necessary to take back PFI contracts.
