  12. Brexit needs 'unity' to succeedpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 2 October 2017

The biggest economic challenge facing the Chancellor is, of course, Brexit. During his speech Mr Hammond said people voted to "take back control" but they didn't vote to "get poorer".

He says the British people have "chosen independence over integration" and that independence must be used in the UK's best interests.

He sounds a warning note, stressing that the UK must pick its way "carefully and cautiously" across the difficult terrain of EU negotiation "to ensure we arrive in good order".

To push the point home, he calls Brexit "one of the most challenging tasks ever undertaken by a peacetime government in this country".

But he reckons that with focus, determination and unity it will be possible to deliver a Brexit that "works for Britain".
