With results from 91 councils declared, and another 59 to come on Friday, it remains a mixed picture across the country.
Labour and the Conservatives have both lost control of key authorities, with Labour failing to take several targets, including the London borough of Wandsworth. However, the party won back Plymouth and became the largest party in previously Tory Trafford.
Broadly speaking, the Conservatives have gained from the collapse of UKIP in areas where a majority voted Leave in the EU referendum, while Labour has picked up more seats in areas where more people voted Remain.
The Lib Dems have made some moderate gains and captured Richmond, in London, from the Conservatives.

Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley says his party has exceeded expectations by gaining councillors in three new areas around England. He says he expects further gains in London later on Friday.
"In a tough political climate when party politics is so polarised around the two main parties, it's hard for a smaller party to get ahead. But with the implosion of UKIP, it's clear the Greens are in the top four."
So far, the Greens have gained seven seats and seen a total of 17 councillors elected.

It's a big disappointment for the Labour Party. It was definitely within its sights. In the last few months it's poured in significant resources. It's also somewhere where a high-profile Westminster constituency - Battersea - went from Tory to Labour in the general election.
It's been Tory for four decades so, on the other side, the Tories will be very relieved.
The Conservatives have seen off Labour's challenge in the London borough of Westminster, retaining control of the council.
Labour have increased their majority on the Hammersmith and Fulham Council, taking nine seats form the Conservatives.
They now have 35 seats to the Conservatives 11.
