    No party has triumphed in Maidstone, Kent, where the Conservatives are the largest party.

    They now have 25 seats, having gained four overnight.

    Labour gained one new seat, taking their tally to three, while the Lib Dems lost two.

    UKIP lost all three of their seats on the council.

    The Conservatives have taken Redditch in Worcestshire from Labour.

    They gained four seats at the expense of both Labour and Ukip.

    Layla Moran joked with BBC News that it was a change for her as a Lib Dem MP to "wake up from an election and not feel sad".

    She said it was "an election about the smaller parties" with larger ones experiencing a "status quo".

    But she accepted there was much more for the Lib Dems to do.

    "We are not saying that it is over," said Ms Moran. "We had a high watermark for sure back when Labour were in government and we are seeking to get that again.

    "But I think Lib Dem voters will be thinking 'yes', and that this is a good day."

    There are still more results to come in, but these are some of the key councils to watch out for...

    Calderdale in West Yorkshire was previously under no overall control, with Labour on 23 seats and the Conservatives on 20.

    Also not held by any party is Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, where both main parties hold 22 seats.

    Birmingham is currently held by Labour, but last year the West Midlands elected a Conservative mayor.

    The Lib Dems are hopeful of taking Kingston-upon-Thames from Conservative control.

    And in Maidstone no one party has control. The Conservatives hold 25 seats and the Lib Dems have 20.

    The Conservatives again held their majority in Runnymede, but lost another three seats in the process.

    They defended 14 but came away with just 11 - giving them 32 seats overall on the council.

    But two independent candidates gained their own seats, and Labour gained its first seat on the council.

    The Conservatives have held their majority in Wyre Forest, Worcestershire, but not without losses.

    The party lost three of the seats it was defending, leading to two additional wins for Labour and one extra seat for the Lib Dems.

    Lib Dem and UKIP losses led to gains for the Conservatives, Labour and Greens in Solihull.

    The Tories held control of the council, winning the nine seats they defended plus one, while the Greens and Labour added one more seat each to their numbers.

    But the Lib Dems lost two of the three seats they were defending and UKIP lost the one seat they were fighting for in the election.

    Theresa May pops up in Barnet, where Conservatives have taken control, to thank party activists.

    She says their message in the area has been "very simple - Conservative councillors deliver those better services, manage your money wisely and keep council tax lower".

    She highlights the role of anti-Semitism allegations against some Labour members, saying: "People of all faiths have rejected vile anti-Semitism, which has gone unchallenged in the Labour Party for too long."

  11. Pendle stays with no overall controlpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    The Lancashire council of Pendle has remained with no overall control, but the BNP has waved goodbye to its last councillor.

    The seat held by the party was not defended by them for the election, and the space was taken by a Conservative.

    The Tories hold the most seats, with 24, followed by Labour on 15 and the Lib Dems on nine.

  12. Labour gains Kirkleespublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Labour has taken over Kirklees Council after winning an additional two seats in last night's vote.

    The authority was under no overall control after the 2014 election, but Labour now hold 36 seats - a majority of three.

    it came at a cost to the Lib Dems, who lost two of the five seats they defended - now holding seven on the council overall.

    The Tories won all seven seats they defended and now have 20 seats on the council.

    Labour has managed to win two more seats in North Tyneside, taking one each from the Conservatives and the Lib Dems.

    It dominates the council, with 53 seats overall, compared to the Tories' six and the Lib Dems' one.

    UKIP lost all ten seats it was defending in Great Yarmouth, giving both the Tories and Labour wins in the area.

    The Conservatives were up by six seats and keeps control of the council.

    But Labour also won an additional four seats, winning six overall in the election.

    Labour has held control of Burnley, but lost two seats in the process.

    The Lib Dems also lost two seats in the election, falling from five to three.

    But the Conservatives, UKIP, the Green Party and an independent candidate all gained one seat.

    Some more reaction from Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable, who said in a statement: “We are on course for what could be our best set of local election results in a decade and that is thanks to the outstanding efforts of our members.

    "The Liberal Democrats have enjoyed gains across England, from Hull to Gosport, Liverpool to West Oxfordshire, Sunderland to Richmond - in both Leave areas and Remain. We have shown that we can win anywhere. He described the Lib Dems as "the only party fighting for an exit from Brexit", adding they were "making gains against both a Conservative Party driven by their right wing, and a left wing Labour Party absorbed by Corbyn's dated economic vision."

    Labour figures in Birmingham are feeling quite gloomy, according to the BBC's Midlands political editor Patrick Burns.

    He says the signs are that turnout has been low, raising concerns in Labour circles that they have struggled to get out their vote - particularly in white working-class areas of the city.

    The Conservatives, however, have been getting a better than expected reception in the less prosperous areas in the north of the city, he says.
