    The Lib Dems and the Green Party increased their vote share by 17.7% and 4.5% respectively.

    Three parties saw their vote share fall - UKIP (29.9%) the Conservatives (20.7%) and Labour (7.4%).

    The Brexit Party - who had not been formed at the time of the last election - won 37.8% of the vote share.

    Plaid Cyrmu leader Adam Price says the results show that "Wales is a Remain nation" and accuses Labour of "facing both ways".

    "This is a historic victory for us - overtaking Labour for the first time in our 94 year history," he says.

    The SNP campaigned on a very clear anti-Brexit message.

    They specifically appealed to people who are not natural SNP supporters - people who are not necessarily in favour of Scottish independence.

    The SNP told those voters 'lends us your vote to send a message.'

    The Lib Dems have also done very well by doubling their vote from five years ago.

    Labour have done very badly in these elections

    That may be people who have voted Labour in the past 'lending' their vote to the SNP or the Liberal Democrats.

    It is clear the SNP will be the ones celebrating tonight.

    The 37% of the vote won by Brexit Party is five points above what UKIP achieved in 2014, much as in the rest of the country.

    Meanwhile the Lib Dems have narrowly failed to overtake Lab on what is a 10% swing.

    Here too the Greens have enjoyed a notable increase in support of 5 points while the Conservative vote has collapsed into fifth place with a 14 point drop in its support.

    The Brexit Party - who did not exist at the time of the last European election - achieved a 38.2% share of the vote.

    The Lib Dems and Greens grew their share of the vote by 11.8% and 4.5% respectively.

    Three parties saw a drop in their share of the vote - UKIP (26%), the Conservatives (15.3%) and Labour (11%).

    The turnout was 34.7% - a small increase on a turnout last time of 32.6%.

    Two grandees of the main UK parties have confirmed they backed the Liberal Democrats in these European elections.

    Ex-Tory deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine has confirmed to BBC Radio 5Live that he voted Lib Dem, as he said he would before the polls opened.

    While Labour's former director of communications Alastair Campbell said he hoped that his vote for the Lib Dems would help the Labour leadership "see sense".

    Earlier in the evening Jeremy Corbyn's party lost in his own constituency.

    Now, Theresa May experiences similar disappointing results in her area.

    In Windsor and Maidenhead the Conservatives were beaten into third place by the Brexit Party who came first and the Lib Dems who came in second.
