  2. Tax pledge shows Johnson 'aspirations'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 10 June 2019

    Radio 4 PM

Mark Francois, a Boris Johnson backer, says it wouldn't just be "wealthy pensioners" who benefit from his tax pledge.

But more important than the detail of the policy, Mr Francois says, is that is shows his "direction of travel", his "aspiration", to lift tax thresholds.

He says party members are focused on Brexit above all and want to see it delivered. Mr Johnson is overwhelmingly popular with those members, he insists.

  3. Rifkind backs Jeremy Huntpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 10 June 2019

    BBC News Channel

Conservative grandee Sir Malcolm Rifkind says there are "a series of very good candidates", but he's looking for "someone with a proven record of running a government department".

He says whoever takes over faces some "hard negotiating" to try to get out of the Brexit impasse.

"There's a number of the candidates I could support, but if I have to say one, I would choose Jeremy Hunt," he goes on.

  4. Nominations for Tory leadership contest closepublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 10 June 2019
    Breaking

That's it. No more MPs can submit their papers. Nominations are closed.

Now we wait for the final list of candidates to be released.

Remember, each MP needed eight others to support them to get their name on the ballot.

MPs will then take part in a series of votes to get the list down to a final two, before opening the vote up to the wider party membership.

Then the winner not only becomes the next Tory leader, but the next UK prime minister.

  14. Cocaine admission continues to dominatepublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 10 June 2019

    Nick Eardley
    BBC Scotland Westminster correspondent

There was a pretty thorough talk-through of domestic and international policies at the launch.

There were also some pretty explicit digs at Boris Johnson too, such as his rival's proposals on cutting the top tax rate and accusations he is "hiding in his bunker" by not doing broadcast interviews or a formal launch yet.

But the big issue continuing to dominate is the admission that he took cocaine more than 20 years ago.

One of Mr Gove's supporters, Tory MP Tom Tugenhadt, said his campaign should continue.

He said if the voters were "looking for angels", then they were "looking at the wrong country".

He added: "We are all human. He wasn’t a minister, he wasn’t a politician, he was a journalist."

  15. Gove: I'm a great fan of Boris'spublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 10 June 2019

ITV's political editor Robert Peston asks for more on Mr Gove's view on the controversial backstop.

Mr Gove says he wants a "full stop to the backstop", but doesn't go into great detail. He says that the Northern Ireland devolved government needs to be back in session so that "those voices can be heard" on Brexit.

Finally, when asked if he would let Boris Johnson in his cabinet, Mr Gove replies that the first person he's talk to about that - if chosen to lead - would be the Queen.

But he insists: "I'm a great fan of Boris's. I enjoy working with him."

  18. Michael Gove 'flexible on Brexit date'published at 15:43 British Summer Time 10 June 2019

Mr Gove is asked about foreign policy now. He says his position "has evolved" on the Iraq War. Having said at the time that the war was a British foreign policy success, he now feels the way the UK went about withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan "was not properly thought through".

When asked if he has a firm deadline date for Brexit, Mr Gove says he absolutely wants to deliver Brexit, but is prepared to delay the date of departure.

"I'm proud that we as a United Kingdom are stronger together," he says, responding to a question on Scotland's place in the Union. He says he wants to make sure that people are aware that "prosperity rests" on Scotland being in the UK.
