"We cannot call ourselves a one-nation party if there are whole swathes of the country who don't think we share their values," Sajid Javid continues.

He lists some of those people - "millenials, especially young women", "people who care about climate change", "disaffected working class voters".

"We need to make people feel included and welcome, not excluded and ignored."

Mr Javid says he respects all the other candidates and he would be "happy to work with them all".

But he believes "this is the moment" the party needs a new type of leader - not a "comfort-zone choice". Wonder who he means?

"A leader not just for Christmas or just for Brexit," he goes on.

"We have been in power now for almost a decade [and] at some point in next three years, we will have to face a general election and try to win a majority... after we have only won one election majority in the past quarter of the century.

"We [won't win] by galvanising a narrow base... but by building broad support across the country."

Mr Javid says the party can "rebuild that appeal", adding: "We just need to show the public we have changed and deserve another look.

"We need tomorrow's leader today. Not the same old insiders with same old school ties." Think we can get who he might mean that time.

Sajid Javid says he has "broken through many barriers" in his life.

"I am used to people telling me what I can't do," he says.

"I am more interested in what I can do because I know what I can do... and what we can do as a party."

He says he can "make post-Brexit Britain what many naysayers say it can't be", and has a "credible plan to leave by the end of October".

He adds: "I have the background, ideas and positive vision for the future [to] keep Jeremy Corbyn far away from 10 Downing Street."

Mr Javid re-tells an anecdote where he "punched" the boy at school who gave him racial abuse.

He also jokes about Labour trying to stall his launch with their Commons motion.

But, he adds: "I refused to be labelled, to be put into a box, to be the person people said that I should be."

Sajid Javid starts by talking about feeling like an outsider as a child.

He says the other children at school told him about their holidays, but he "only ever went to Rochdale".

In his first job in the City he said "men told me my face didn't fit".

And, when he wanted to marry "the love of his life - who was white Christian" his wider family told him to "stick to his own".

Ms Davidson says he would give voters a "greater reason to feel pride" in the UK.

She tells the launch: "If the Conservatives are going to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of Downing Street and keep the coalition of [the UK]... we must reconnect to those who have stopped listening us and appeal to a new audience."

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson is introducing Sajid Javid at his launch.

She says she is a "new mum who needs a pretty big reason to jump on a flight" and spend time away from her boy.

She says the home secretary is the "best place man to take our country forward".

Ms Davidson says the view from outside Westminster "isn't pretty" but Mr Javid could bring the country together around "optimism".

She adds: "This is a phrase I haven't used very often, but he is the man for me."

By 309 votes to 298, MPs have rejected Labour's motion seeking to provide a way to stop a future PM forcing through a no-deal Brexit.

It means MPs will now not be able to introduce legislation on 25 June to attempt to stop the UK leaving the EU without a deal at the end of October.
