    Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom says the result of the vote was "incredibly disappointing".

    She says it shows "Jeremy Corbyn is just determined to stop Brexit at any cost".

    "My real, real hope is that colleagues will reflect overnight" and not take away the prime minister's "negotiating hand", she says.

    "If Parliament is determined to take no-deal off the table, there is nothing the EU will negotiate on."

    If the bill is passed tomorrow, it means the EU has no incentives to make any changes at all," he says.

    Government sources have confirmed to the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg that all 21 Conservative rebels are having the whip removed.

    Removing the whip effectively means expelling the MPs from the parliamentary party.

    Ken Clarke, one of the Tory rebels who faces losing the party whip, insists on BBC Newsnight that he is still a Conservative, but the party has changed.

    He says "it’s been taken over by a rather knockabout character who has this bizarre 'crash-it-through' philosophy" and says the cabinet is "the most right-wing any Conservative Party has ever produced".

    "They're not in control of events. The prime minister comes and talks complete rubbish to us."

    If the bill passes the House of Commons, it then has to pass the House of Lords.

    Newsnight political editor Nick Watt says pro-government peers have tabled 92 amendments just to the business motion.

    He says opposition figures in the House of Lords are saying "we can beat them, if they are going to be tough we are going to be really tough".

    He says the government does not have a majority in the House of Lords, but they are determined to used every procedural device to block this bill there.

    Boris Johnson was getting some people on his side but that is a heavy defeat.

    I spoke to one former minister - a Boris Johnson supporter - who said "it is just not sustainable".
