  2. Labour MPs 'united'published at 15:21 British Summer Time 5 September 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Mary Creagh MP

Labour MPs are "united" in stopping Boris Johnson taking the UK out of the EU without a deal, Mary Creagh MP says.

"We have to wait for Parliament to come back in October so we don't get any more shenanigans from this prime minister, and we see either a delay or an extension," she says.

"Only then can Labour possibly think about a general election. We are not going to put the future of thousands of jobs - our manufacturing jobs, our NHS - at stake for the chance to beat this prime minister."

Will prorogation still go ahead? Madeline

    Quote Message

At the moment it will. The Prime Minister went to the Queen and asked her to agree to a prorogation that would happen between Monday and Thursday next week. It’s up to the government to determine exactly when in that window it will begin. But if the government doesn’t want to prorogue it will have to go back to the Queen and ask to cancel it. It depends on whether the government feel it’s still useful to have the commons sitting so they can secure an early election or whether they would prefer to have parliamentary activity shut down.

  6. Jo Johnson's tweet 'not brotherly'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 5 September 2019

    BBC News Channel

The BBC's chief political correspondent Vicki Young says the way Jo Johnson announced his resignation - on social media - was particularly surprising.

"I don’t think people really saw that coming," she says."It’s the way he’s done it, it’s the timing.

"There are ways of doing this kind of resignation if you are the prime minister’s brother".

She says putting it out in a tweet and "accusing his brother of not acting in the national interest" was the most damaging way he could have done it.

She adds that he had taken the job in Boris Johnson's government despite knowing he was on a "completely different page" to his brother when it came to Brexit.

  10. Jo Johnson decision 'not surprising'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 5 September 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Damian Green

Former Tory Cabinet minister Damian Green says Jo Johnson's decision to resign as an MP is "not that surprising" because of his wish to remain in the EU.

The prime minister's brother had resigned as a minister last year in protest at Theresa May's Brexit deal before being brought back in under Boris Johnson.

Mr Green told the News Channel: "I imagine Jo has been wrestling with this ever since he came into government.

"Because it’s the prime minister’s brother, it’s got a huge amount of attention - in political terms, it’s not that surprising.”

He added that he thought the timing was to give his constituency time to select a new candidate if a general election goes ahead.

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Belgian MEP Philippe Lamberts is on the European Parliament's Brexit steering group.

He tells The World at One that he does not believe the EU would refuse an extension to Article 50, despite some claims to the contrary.

"I do not believe that the [EU]27 would take responsibility for pulling the plug and thereby provoking no-deal Brexit at this point in time.

"I think this will not happen so whatever British government comes back with a request for an extension, it will be granted."

Journalists finally tracked down Jo Johnson to ask him more about his resignation from the government - and standing down as Tory MP.

But Jo was more keen to get on his bike and "go to work".

All he said to reporters was: "It's been an honour to be MP for Orpington and a minister under three governments, but it's time to move on and I've got to get to work."

Speaking to The World at One, Luciana Berger - the former labour MP who has now joined the Lib Dems (via Change UK) - says she wants to be in a party that is "very clear where it stands" on Brexit and is unequivocal about having a further referendum.

When asked about whether she would back a general election, she says she "certainly won't be supporting it" before no-deal Brexit is no longer possible.

"This is not a real general election, this is a general election in order to facilitate Boris Johnson's plans.

"We need to see first an extension of Article 50 so this country can't crash out without a deal."

    Pete WishartImage source, UK Parliament

The government's potential second attempt to secure a general election on Monday is an "attempt to suspend democracy", the SNP's shadow Westminster leader Pete Wishart said.

Speaking about Scottish Conservative MPs who voted for a no-deal, Mr Wishart said: "This isn't just turkeys voting for Christmas, this is turkeys voting for Christmas, turkeys lathering themselves in cranberry sauce and shoving stuffing up their posteriors."

The Leader of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg said the SNP "is scared of going in front of their own voters".

"If he believes Scottish Conservatives will lose in their seats in an election, then SNP MPs shouldn't be in danger and should want an election," he said.
