The cabinet meeting has just wrapped up. We’ve seen cabinet ministers pouring out of No 10.

The meeting didn’t last long – just around an hour. You have to imagine one of the things they were talking about was the chances of getting the deal through Parliament.

But as ministers left Downing Street they were tight-lipped.

The most striking moment was when Leader of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg got into the wrong car.

Certainly all of the cabinet will have been involved in this concerted effort to persuade MPs to back the PM’s deal.

  4. Sturgeon: Labour 'never forgiven' in Scotland if deal passespublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Nick Eardley
    BBC political correspondent

Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she fears enough Labour MPs could back the Brexit deal to allow it to pass tomorrow.

Speaking in Westminster, the SNP leader said: "I have an increasing suspicion that there will be enough Labour votes to help the deal go through - which will mean Labour is never forgiven in Scotland for being the facilitator of Brexit."

She warned against “nods and winks” being given to Labour MPs in Brexit-backing constituencies – a reference to Labour MPs being told they will not lose the whip if they back the government on Saturday.

Ms Sturgeon argued the deal would be "atrocious" for Scotland and said her party would look at all options in the coming days to stop it passing.

She added: "If this deal passes I suspect history will look back on the day it passes as the day the Westminster political union died."

Extinction Rebellion protesters have descended on Westminster just hours after blocking Oxford Circus with a wooden pyramid structure.

Activists sang and held up their hands, which many had painted red to symbolise blood, outside the gates of Downing Street.

One protester, who appeared to be dressed as Boris Johnson, climbed the scaffolding surrounding Big Ben.

  11. Sizeable number of MPs who are undecided - BBC analysispublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Peter Barnes
    BBC political analyst

It is too close to call at the moment.

BBC research has it down to 302 MPs whom we are confident are planning to vote for the deal.

We have 301 we are confident are planning to vote against the deal.

But that leaves a sizeable number – 36 – who are undecided. And it is this group who are going to be crucial.

There are effectively three different groups of MPs that Boris Johnson needs to win over.

There are the pro-Brexit Conservatives; Labour MPs in Leave constituencies – with perhaps nine who we are confident are going to vote for the deal – and around 15 or so who are undecided; and a third group of independent MPs, a lot of whom are former Tory MPs, and quite a few of those are undecided.

Asked if his respect for Boris Johnson has increased, European Council President Donald Tusk says: "I think it showed that Boris Johnson is really determined to finalise the deal no doubt.

"I have a different opinion about Brexit as such but I should say that Boris Johnson is surprisingly effective."

However, he adds: "Our assessment will be complete only after voting in the House of Commons."

  13. Momentum is with the PM, says Conservative MPpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

Conservative MP John Baron, who voted against Theresa May's deal, now says he will probably vote for the deal secured by Boris Johnson.

"In any negotiation, there are going to be bits that you have to compromise on," he says.

"The EU have had to compromise on tearing up that backstop.

"On that basis, I think I will be supporting the deal tomorrow... I can't speak for everybody but my sense of it is that the momentum is with the prime minister."

  14. Tory rebels 'should have whip removed'published at 16:16 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack says he thinks Conservative MPs who do not back Boris Johnson's Brexit deal on Saturday should have the party whip removed.

This means they would be expelled from the Conservative parliamentary party.

In September, Mr Johnson expelled 21 MPs after they rebelled against him in a bid to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

  16. Former Tory MP: Best for Britain that we leave with a dealpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

MP Alistair Burt, who was expelled from the parliamentary Conservative Party for opposing a no-deal Brexit, says: "I recognise that there's been a deal and in one sense I'm pleased that we're going to leave with a deal, but I'm very sad that we're leaving.

"I'm not a Brexiteer, I voted to remain in the EU - I wish we would, but I don't think we can after the referendum and everything we've been through.

"I do genuinely and honestly believe it's best for Britain and the EU that we leave with a deal."

Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar has sought to reassure concerns over the deal from the DUP.

“The Queen will still be the Queen, the pound will still be the pound, people will still post letters in Royal Mail red letterboxes," he said.

"Northern Ireland will still be part of the United Kingdom and because of the Good Friday Agreement that’s protected until such a time, should that time ever arise, when the majority of people in Northern Ireland vote otherwise.”
