    House of Commons
    Parliament

Mr Johnson stands up to respond to Mr Clarke - who is sat next to the former prime minister, Theresa May, on the Tory backbenches.

"We cannot now know what the EU will do in response to the request from Parliament - I stress it wasn't my request - to ask for a delay," the prime minister says.

"I think it would still be very much in the best interests of this country and of democracy to get Brexit done by 31 October," he adds.

"I intend to press on but I'm afraid we now have to see what our EU friends will decide on our behalf."

  3. Clarke: PM should 'get over it' - Halloween is just Halloweenpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 23 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

    Ken Clarke

Veteran Europhile Ken Clarke calls for the PM to act in a "reasonable and statesman-like way" and table a motion for a new and longer timetable for MPs to scrutinise his Brexit bill.

The former Conservative - who was expelled from the parliamentary party over Brexit - asks Mr Johnson: "Will he, having reflected, let us know that he's about to table a reasonable timetable motion so this House can complete the task of finalising the details of the withdrawal bill so we can move on on a basis which might begin to reunite the nation once again?"

"To put 39 people in a locked metal container shows a contempt for human life which is evil," she says.

"The best thing we can do to honour their memory is to find the perpetrators."
