Meanwhile, what's happening with Brexit? The UK had been due to leave tomorrow, 31 October, but EU leaders have agreed to approve Boris Johnson's request for an extension until 31 January next year.

  3. Recap: MPs vote for 12 December general electionpublished at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

That's where we're going to leave our live coverage tonight, after a dramatic day in Parliament when MPs backed Boris Johnson's plan for an election on Thursday, 12 December.

Legislation to enact the snap poll was backed by 438 votes to 20 and will begin its passage through the House of Lords tomorrow - where it is not expected to be opposed.

MPs rejected a Labour plan to hold the poll on 9 December, while proposals to lower the voting age to 16 and give EU citizens the right to vote were scuppered when amendments were not selected.

After the bill gets royal assent, Parliament will be formally shut down - or dissolved - 25 working days before the election date and official campaigning will get under way.

So, there's a few more weeks of political excitement ahead. Thanks for joining us.

  11. SNP MP: 'Seems like' ministers will not bring Brexit deal backpublished at 21:04 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Kirsty Blackman

The SNP's Kirsty Blackman says it "seems like" the government will stick to its commitment not to try again to pass its Brexit deal legislation before the election.

A fear of this happening was one of the reasons why the SNP had said it would have preferred an election slightly earlier, on 9 December.

She says the party will be telling voters the SNP will do "everything we can" to prevent Brexit from taking place, as well as highlighting cuts to public spending, during the forthcoming campaign.

  12. The stakes could not be higherpublished at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

    Rob Watson
    BBC political correspondent

This will be the first December election in the UK in nearly 100 years.

The stakes could not be higher. The result could well determine what happens next with Brexit and potentially the very unity of the United Kingdom.

If, as the opinion polls suggest, the Conservatives win, Boris Johnson will likely get any new Parliament to pass his Brexit deal with Britain then leaving the EU before the end of the year.

If they lose or cannot form a majority government, the odds would surely rise on there being either a second referendum and a possible vote to remain, or a very different kind of Brexit or possibly more delay.

  19. MPs to debate NI budget bill tomorrowpublished at 20:40 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

In the light of MPs backing the PM’s election plan, Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg says Parliament is expected to be dissolved next Wednesday, ahead of the expected election on 12 December.

This is because Parliament has to be formally shut down 25 working days before a poll.

He adds that MPs will tomorrow debate all stages of a bill to set a budget for Northern Ireland.

Passing this piece of legislation before Parliament is dissolved was one of the reasons some ministers wanted a poll on 12 December, not 9 December - the date proposed by Labour.
