  1. Labour 'weren't expecting to take Tiverton and Honiton'published at 03:01 British Summer Time 24 June 2022

Darren Jones, Labour MP for Bristol North West, is at the count in Crediton.

When asked how it was looking for Labour, he said: "I don't think we were expecting to take Tiverton and Honiton as the Labour Party, but we had a great candidate in Liz Pole that worked every day going out and talking to voters, giving people who wanted to vote Labour a very good and credible choice to do so on the ballot paper.

"But we've been hearing great news from Wakefield where it looks like Labour's going to do very well in that election."

A Lib Dem spokesperson says: “This is looking like a clear win. The people of Tiverton and Honiton have spoken up for the country.

"This is an historic victory for the Liberal Democrats and a devastating blow for those Conservative MPs who continue to prop up Boris Johnson."

The Tory majority was more than 24,000.

Are the Lib Dems confident of taking Tiverton and Honiton from the Conservatives, despite the huge 23% swing they require?

Leader Sir Ed Davey has sent a tweet recalling his celebration of the party's victory in the Chesham and Amersham by-election just over a year ago.

Sir Ed was referring to a post-election photo call where he used an inflatable orange hammer to break a blue wall.

Our political correspondent Nick Eardley - who's in Devon for the result - says Lib Dem sources are feeling optimistic that they are on course to win Tiverton and Honiton.

They are not declaring victory yet, but there is a good feeling in the campaign that they could pull off a famous win.

  5. Labour's Louise Haigh: "We're winning back Tory voters"published at 02:35 British Summer Time 24 June 2022

    Gemma Dillon

Speaking at the Wakefield count, Labour MP Louise Haigh has told me her party is "feeling confident from what we’ve seen so far".

The shadow transport secretary and Sheffield Heeley representative said: “We’re really proud of the positive campaign [Labour candidate] Simon Lightwood has run in Wakefield and we hope the people of Wakefield are going to return him as a Labour MP tonight.

    Louise Haigh

“We’re hoping for a vote share about eight or nine points ahead of the Tories, that’s where we’re aiming for tonight.”

She added: “I think the story that’s going to be told from Wakefield is we’re not just winning back the 2019 Tories but people who voted Tory for very many years now.”

The rowing machines and dumbbells have been pushed to one side of Thornes Park Athletics Stadium in Wakefield to make space for the dozens of counters all beginning their night shift.

The stage where the eventual declaration will take place is currently empty, with a nearby bank of cameras ready to go on air at various times of the morning.

The corridors are already starting to fill with candidates and their teams, with 15 in total all hoping for good news in the next few hours.

Outside the building a refreshments tent sits in the centre of a deserted running track, with athletes' energy bars and bananas replaced by Digestives and Rich Tea biscuits (other by-election count snacks are available).

When dawn breaks in West Yorkshire, who will be celebrating a PB?

And who will fall at the final hurdle?

The Tiverton and Honiton by-election turnout is at least 52%.

We were initially told it was 52% but actually it looks like another box of postal votes has been found, so these are now being counted.

But it's certainly higher than the Wakefield turnout.

The turnout at Tiverton and Honiton in the 2019 general election was just under 72%.

Crediton United Football Club is providing a base for the press during the poll count at the nearby Lords Meadow Leisure Centre.

Heart News and LBC Radio journalist Tom Seymour said the flying visit had "perked up everyone here pulling an all nighter".

A BBC cameraman in the room added that it was "exciting", but there were "lots of people ducking for cover".

    James Vincent
BBC Look North political editor reporting from Wakefield

Both polls and bookmakers have strongly signalled a Labour win in Wakefield today.

However, with the polls closed and ballots being verified, the political jungle drums have begun beating here in West Yorkshire...

  18. Things looking neck-and-neck in Tiverton and Honitonpublished at 00:42 British Summer Time 24 June 2022

    Ewan Murrie
    Reporting from Crediton, Devon

    Tiverton and Honiton election count

Members of political parties at the Tiverton and Honiton by-election count are pretty excited with no idea how the vote is going to go.

So far, things look neck-and-neck for the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, based on what both parties are saying.

But that's all guesswork after an extraordinary six weeks or so of campaigning.

There is not usually this much attention on this constituency because it is traditionally a safe Conservative seat.

  19. What matters - and doesn’t - on the ground in Wakefieldpublished at 00:31 British Summer Time 24 June 2022

    Gemma Dillon
    Reporting from Wakefield

Much has been written and spoken about this by-election being one of the the first chances the public will have to give their verdict on Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Whether it’s his handling of the pandemic, the cost of living or Partygate, people’s ballots will supposedly mean more than a simple vote.

But talking to people in Wakefield, for many Partygate isn’t an overwhelming factor.

Boris Johnson on a tractorImage source, PA Media

Yes, some people are angry with the prime minister and are questioning whether they can trust him to follow through on other pledges, such as levelling up, if they can’t trust him to follow his own rules.

But what I hear much more is ‘lots of people bent the rules’ and ‘it’s Boris isn’t it?’.

While there may be pockets of anger directed at the prime minister I haven’t seen a particular swell of love for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on the ground.

  20. Labour says Wakefield voters have 'seen through Boris Johnson'published at 00:23 British Summer Time 24 June 2022

Shadow defence secretary John Healey says any win in Wakefield would be Labour's best by-election result for 10 years - its first gain in a by-election since Corby in 2012. But, he adds, he's not expecting a huge majority because the turnout will be lower than in a general election.

He tells Newsnight on BBC Two that for the first time since the 2019 general election, voters have been returning to Labour from the Conservatives, because - he says - they've "seen through Boris Johnson and don't like the contempt he showed by breaking the [Covid] rules he insisted the rest of us followed".

Healey adds that people have also been saying the government has not got a grip on the problems they're facing, chiefly the cost of living.
