  1. PM commends UK's role in training Ukraine troopspublished at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Sunak says helping Ukraine has absolutely been an international effort.

He also says it's a mark of UK leadership that a dozen countries have come to the UK to take part in training programmes for Ukrainian soldiers.

"It's something that's making an incredible difference on the ground and something I know President Zelensky is incredibly grateful for," Sunak says.

Starmer continues to ask the PM about Ukraine, saying he welcomes the additional support for Ukraine and points to the "brilliant work of troops in Salisbury training Ukrainian soldiers".

He then asks Sunak whether continuing the international effort will ensure Vladimir Putin's defeat.

  3. Sunak wants to see Ukrainian victory this yearpublished at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Sunak responds by saying the UK's objective remains Ukraine's victory on the battlefield this year, adding that Putin's aggression can't and won't stand.

That's why the UK is accelerating its military support for Ukraine, he says, including training its marines and pilots on advanced combat operations.

"We will continue to support Ukraine to ensure a decisive military victory on the battlefield this year," he says.

A different tone to Prime Minister’s Question Time this week, as I look down from the Press Gallery, given President Zelensky’s visit.

In the opening exchanges there is a more consensual feel to the exchanges because the UK’s support for Ukraine has not provoked significant domestic political debate.

  5. Starmer: Ukraine war must end with defeat of Putinpublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Starmer says "every time Putin has been appeased, he's been back for more".

He asks if Sunak agrees that British parliamentarians must "speak with one voice" and that the conflict can only end with "the defeat of Putin in Ukraine".

  6. 'We will continue to stand by Ukraine'published at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Sunak joins Starmer in paying respects to the people of Turkey and Syria affected by the earthquake and says the UK is providing assistance to Turkish authorities, including the 77 responders that arrived yesterday.

He turns to Ukraine, saying the whole country and the House can be proud to have stood by the country when it mattered.

"We will continue to stand by them united as one Parliament and one United Kingdom," he says.

  7. Starmer opens with question about UK's Ukraine supportpublished at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Sir Keir Starmer is at the despatch box, asking his first question.

He starts by echoing the prime minister's welcome to President Zelensky and also paying tribute to those who have been affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey, which have greatly affected the people of Syria too.

Sir Keir says his heart goes out to each and every victim before asking if the country will continue to support Ukraine.

Rishi Sunak, in his opening words, says he's "delighted" that President Zelensky is visiting the UK.

Zelensky's surprise visit could shake up PMQspublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

    Iain Watson
    Political correspondent

Sir Keir Starmer would have had plenty of material prepared for PMQs (coming up at midday) but with President Zelensky's surprise visit, the content of his comments will have had to be revised.

Yesterday's mini-reshuffle, described by one of Starmer's colleagues as "rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic" is now no longer likely to dominate the encounter.

Instead he will have to demonstrate unity on Ukraine and praise the courage of our distinguished visitor from Kyiv.

But the question is how far the Labour leader will, within the constraints of the occasion, try to plough a distinctive political furrow.

For example, the shadow defence secretary John Healey called for cuts to army numbers to be halted and the equipment supplied to Ukraine to be replenished.

So Starmer's tricky task - in tone as well as substance - will be how to sound fully supportive of Ukraine while not being entirely supportive of the UK government.

  12. Zelensky visit welcomed across UK political spectrumpublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

The Ukrainian president's visit today is being warmly welcomed by cross-party MPs. He'll be addressing them in Parliament this afternoon.

Conservative Ben Everitt tweeted to say it'd be an "honour to be addressed by" the wartime leader. "We stand with Ukraine," he added.

Deputy Lib Dem leader Daisy Cooper also showed her support:

  17. New sanctions will speed up pressure on Putin - Cleverlypublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Here's a bit more on the fresh round of Russian sanctions announced by Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

The government says the package hits six entities that have provided military equipment such as drones to the Russia government. They include CST, a manufacturer of Russian drones, and RT-Komplekt, which produces parts for helicopters used by Russia in the war against Ukraine.

The sanctions also target eight individuals and one entity linked to Russian financial networks.

Cleverly says: "These new sanctions accelerate the economic pressure on Putin - undermining his war machine to help Ukraine prevail.

    Quote Message

I am determined, consistent with our laws, that Russia will have no access to the assets we have frozen until it ends, once and for all, its threats to Ukraine's territorial sovereignty and integrity."

  18. UK unveils fresh sanctions on Russiapublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

    Nick Eardley
    Chief political correspondent

As President Zelensky makes his way to Downing Street, the government has just announced a series of new sanctions.

They focus on the Russian military and people close to the Kremlin. It includes companies that manufacture drones and helicopter parts.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly argues sanctions accelerate the economic pain on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his allies.

Zelensky keen to show he can travel despite ongoing warpublished at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2023

Zelensky wants to demonstrate he is not constrained by the war in his travels. He can move around Ukraine, leave it and come back.

This is particularly important given how pro-Kremlin media claimed during the early stages of the war that Zelensky had fled in the face of Russia's invasion.

Russian media also said earlier the government in Kyiv was doomed because the West was "tired" of Ukraine and unwilling to support it.

This is another reason why President Zelensky will be keen to be seen meeting world leaders.

During his visit to the UK, President Zelensky can be expected to thank Great Britain for military assistance provided so far and ask for weapons more deliveries to help Ukraine repel Russia's invasion.
