  2. 'More campaigning would have encouraged people to vote'published at 13:08 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

More now from Radio 5 Live's phone-in on the reasons people did or didn't vote in the local elections.

First time voter Eleanor in Sheffield says she was "really excited" to cast her vote.

"I've been politically minded for a really long time and I felt like this was my opportunity to put my stamp on it and have a voice," she says.

However she adds it was "upsetting" to hear in her local polling station that she was the only first-time voter they had seen all day.

"I know in my area there's a lot of people that have turned 18 [and them not turning out] shows there's a disconnect... that really upset me because it shows the level of inactivity there is amongst my generation."

Lisa in Grimsby says she was disappointed at the lack of campaigning from all parties in her area.

    "Nobody came knocking," she says.

"The turnout in my town was 23% I think, really not good. [More campaigning] would have encouraged people to go vote."

  7. We are paying the price for Boris and Liz Truss era - David Davispublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

Tory MP David Davis didn't mince his words when he was asked about the reasons behind his party's significant council losses.

"It is clear we're paying the price for the end of the Boris and Liz Truss era," he says at the local election count in Anlaby, East Yorkshire.

But the former cabinet minister for Theresa May was full of praise for the current PM.

"I think Rishi Sunak is doing a great job and getting a grip, but it will take time for us to get back from that."

Davis adds that the downturn in Tory fortunes signals it will be a closer race in the East Riding today than usual.

"I’ve been getting a good response on the streets but there’s little doubt that, to some extent, we’ll be punished for Truss and Johnson."

  9. When will the next general election be?published at 12:52 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

We still have plenty more results to get through in these local elections in England, but many people are already wondering when the next general election will be held.

The government has not yet set a date for the UK general election - where all 650 MPs are elected to the House of Commons - so it's not known yet when the next one will be.

However, an election must happen very five years, so the latest possible date for a general election is January 2025.

  12. How will it go in key Labour target North Warwickshire?published at 12:39 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Shelley Phelps
BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, Political Reporter

At Coleshill Leisure Centre counting has just got under way for North Warwickshire Borough Council.

This is a key Labour target - it’s currently run by the Conservatives who’ve been in charge here since 2015.

The two Westminster seats are also Conservative held. The Nuneaton MP is deputy chief whip Marcus Jones and North Warwickshire is represented by Craig Tracey MP, who’s also a vice chair of the Conservative Party with responsibility for local government campaigns.

Votes are counted in North Warwickshire

Both won majorities of over 10,000 at the last general election so these seats aren’t technically marginal.

But they have returned Labour MPs before, and the West Midlands is bellwether territory - so the results here will be closely watched.

Labour Party sources here tell me they’re “very confident” of a “narrow win”.

But Conservative MP Craig Tracey, who’s here at the count, is not so sure about that. He says he’s staying optimistic about his party chances of keeping control of the council.

But whatever happens, he says the results will give his party food for thought.

    Nick Eardley
    Chief political correspondent

The Lib Dems are eyeing up more wins in the south of England this afternoon – in traditional Tory heartlands.

We’re told there could be an upset in Surrey Heath where Michael Gove is a local MP.

Lib Dem sources say there’s a fight for control with the Lib Dems and Conservatives neck and neck at the moment.

  15. What does 'hung' mean in local elections?published at 12:32 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

A lot of you have been asking what a hung council, or no overall control means.

A hung council simply means that no party achieved a majority of seats. In this event this usually results in a coalition or joint leadership of a council.

  17. Conservative council leader 'devastated' at resultpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

Let's hear more from Mid Suffolk, where Conservative council leader, Suzie Morley, says she is "devastated" at losing her seat to the Green Party.

Morley, who lost her Stonham seat by 196 votes, said "the last six months have left a nasty taste in a lot of people's mouths".

Despite helping local residents with the cost of living she says the government nationally "haven't done us any favours" and the Conservatives had lost their reputation for economic competence because of "what happened before Christmas".

However she did praise the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as he has "started to turn things around".

  18. Brexit-supporting areas returning Labour councilspublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    David Wallace Lockhart
    Political correspondent

What do Medway, Plymouth and Stoke-on-Trent have in common?

They’re all areas that voted heavily for Brexit in 2016, but they’ve all returned Labour councils overnight.

It’s no secret Labour has struggled in Brexit-backing areas in recent years (just ask all those Labour MPs who lost their ‘red wall’ seats in the 2019 general election).

But the fact the party now seems to be making gains in these areas will be welcomed at Labour HQ.

But it’s important to remember Labour has to do more than simply claw back support in Brexit-backing areas if Sir Keir Starmer wants to be prime minister.

There’s a long, long way to go in these local elections, with most counting happening throughout today.

Sir Keir will be looking to see if a path to 10 Downing Street appears to be opening up. Remember, he needs a bigger swing than Tony Blair got in 1997 to get a majority.

  20. Greens oust Tory leader of Mid Suffolk councilpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

A Green Party candidate has ousted the Conservative leader of Mid Suffolk District Council.

Nicholas Hardingham beat Suzie Morley to take the Stonham ward by 196 votes.

The Greens are hoping to make history in Mid Suffolk by wining their first outright council majority.

The largely rural area is currently run by the Tories in coalition with one independent councillor.

We're expecting the full results this evening.
