  1. I disagree that civilians are dying in Gaza - Israeli PM's adviser

    Mark Regev

Mark Regev, senior adviser to Israel's PM, says "this is not just another round of fighting" between Hamas and Israel.

"What happened on 7 October - the single largest attack of antisemitic violence since the terrible years of the Holocaust - has changed the situation dramatically.

"This is war... And we are responding. We didn't want this conflict but we will win it. This will end on our terms," Regev says.

Asked about the Israeli hostages in Gaza, Regev says that Israel hopes to bring them home alive, but cannot guarantee it.

"Anyone who harms one of these hostages, we will find out, we will pursue them and we will bring them to justice... It might take a year, 10 years or 25 years, but you will be punished."

Regev also says that the coming ground invasion will be "very difficult" for residents of Gaza.

The World Health Organization said forcing hospital patients to move would be tantamount to a "death sentence". When this is put to him, Regev says that "when you're fighting a war innocent people will be killed," but that Israel will try and keep "casualties to a minimum".

"The most important thing for us is to destroy the Hamas military machine," Regev says.

On Friday Scotland's first minister said Israel was "going too far" and that innocent civilians in Gaza could not simply be "collateral damage".

Humza Yousaf shared a video of his mother-in-law, Elizabeth El-Nakla, describing the situation on the ground. She and her husband are stuck in Gaza after travelling from Dundee to visit a sick relative.

She issued an emotional plea for help after Israel told more than a million people to flee northern Gaza.

Yousaf said she was in a "real state of distress".

  6. Watch: James Cleverly runs for cover in Israel

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly was in Israel in the past week – where cameras caught the moment he had to run for cover as warning sirens went off.

Cleverly was in Ofakim, southern Israel, which is near Gaza and also close to the site of Hamas’s murderous attack on people attending a music festival.

  7. Analysis

Constitutional change set to dominate SNP conference

    David Wallace Lockhart

    Political correspondent

A lot has happened to the SNP in the last year - they've changed leader, there's a police investigation under way into their finances, and polls suggest a slide in the party's popularity.

That's the backdrop that party leader Humza Yousaf faces when he opens the conference's debate on independence strategy on Sunday afternoon.

He'll tell activists that there are no shortcuts to constitutional change.

But he does want to use the next general election to give him a mandate to start talks with UK ministers about independence.

At this point, it looks like whoever forms the next UK government will not want to engage with the constitutional question.

There are others in the SNP who feel that now is not the right moment to push too hard with regards to independence.

  8. SNP conference to begin with independence debate in Aberdeen

While events in the Middle East have dominated the news agenda, the SNP's annual conference starts in Aberdeen later. It will include a key debate on Scottish independence.

First Minister Humza Yousaf and Westminster leader Stephen Flynn have proposed using the next general election as a de facto referendum.

It comes as the party faces criticism over the NHS, the attainment gap and the worst drug death rates in Europe.

And just days before the conference SNP MP Lisa Cameron defected to the Conservatives.

  9. Newspaper headlines: Gazans' 'escape to hell' and PM vows Israel support

Front pages of the Sunday Mirror and Sunday Express

Time for a look at this morning's papers - most of which focus on Israel's expected ground offensive in Gaza.

The Sunday Times has spoken to Israeli reservists waiting for orders, among whom, it says, there's no thirst for revenge - they simply answered the call of duty.

Meanwhile, the Observer warns people living in Gaza are already running out of food, water, fuel and medical supplies and now face a terrifying escalation of bloodshed and misery.

"Escape to hell" is the headline in the Sunday Mirror.

  10. The latest as thousands flee north Gaza after Israeli order

Palestinians walk by the site of Israeli strikes on houses in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip

Let's bring you the latest on the unfolding situation in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis in the territory deepens as Israel besieges the narrow territory:

    • The UN estimates nearly one million Palestinians have now been displaced; while the Palestinian Health Authority says more than 2,000 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes
    • The World Health Organization says Israel's order to evacuate northern Gaza threatens the lives of patients at more than 20 hospitals there
    • US President Joe Biden held calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas
    • He urged Israel to provide safety for civilians amid the ongoing bombardment of Gaza
    • Diplomatic efforts to prevent the violence from spreading have been stepped up, with Biden's Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, meeting Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman
    • Meanwhile, the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has held talks in Qatar with the foreign minister of Iran

  11. Humza Yousaf's in-laws' plea for help to leave Gaza

The mother-in-law of Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf has issued an emotional plea for help after Israel warned more than a million people to flee north Gaza.

Elizabeth El-Nakla and her husband, Maged, travelled to the south of the Palestinian enclave last week to see a sick relative.

But, days into their trip, Hamas launched its attack on Israel, which left 1,300 people dead.

The couple, from Dundee, are now trapped in a war zone with no obvious way out.

Below you can watch as she pleads for humanity from the south of Gaza.

  12. What’s Cleverly said so far on Israel?

James Cleverly visits the Ofakim house of David and Rachel Edri who survived a 20-hour hostage situation during the Hamas attack in southern Israel
Image caption: James Cleverly visits the Ofakim house of David and Rachel Edri who survived a 20-hour hostage situation during the Hamas attack in southern Israel

James Cleverly visited Israel earlier this week – in a visit aimed at showing the UK's “unwavering solidarity” with Israel.

While there, Cleverly said Israel had a right to defend itself and also to try and get back people who had been kidnapped by Hamas militants.

He said he wanted to see “as few civilian casualties as possible” – but stressed that "Hamas habitually embeds its military capability, its terrorist capability, within civilian populations”.

There were calls – including from the head of Amnesty International UK – that Cleverly should also urge the Israeli authorities to respect international humanitarian law.

  13. What’s been the UK's response to the Israel-Hamas crisis?

The UK announced this week it will send two Royal Navy ships as well as surveillance aircraft to the eastern Mediterranean to boost security in the region.

The aircraft began patrols to “track threats” such as weapons being transferred to terrorist groups, the UK government said.

Like lots of countries, the UK is also arranging flights for British nationals stuck in Israel.
