  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is taking MPs' questions in the House of Commons

  • Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer challenged the PM on migration after new figures showed net migration to the UK last year was a record 745,000

  • Sir Keir said the Conservatives have "lost control of the borders" but Mr Sunak said he was "determined to bring them down to sustainable levels"

  • The PM also accused his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis of "grandstanding" by bringing up the return to Greece of the Elgin Marbles while he was in London

  • Mr Sunak cancelled a meeting with Mr Mitsotakis after he told the BBC having some of the artefacts - also called the Elgin Marbles - in the UK was like cutting the Mona Lisa in half

  1. Starmer begins with joke about the Parthenon Sculpturespublished at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer puts his first question to the prime minister.

He says the PM spent this week arguing about an ancient relic which a tiny amount of the British public have interest in, referring to the row over the Parthenon Sculptures, or Elgin Marbles.

"That’s enough about the Tory Party," Starmer jokes.

Starmer says that in 2019 the Tories said they would control immigration and British people would be in control.

    "How's it going?" he asks.

Hello from the press gallery of the House of Commons.

There was a modest cheer from the Conservative benches just now as Rishi Sunak walks in.

The seats are filling up – Keir Starmer the Labour leader was already here when I arrived so I can’t offer a measure on the cheer-o-meter when he turned up.

  6. Row over Parthenon Sculptures expected to be brought uppublished at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

Expect at least some of today’s session to focus on the Parthenon Sculptures, also known as the Elgin Marbles, the fate of which is at the centre of a diplomatic row between the British and Greek governments.

Earlier this week Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was in the UK where he was due to meet his British counterpart Rishi Sunak to discuss issues including migration, climate change and the Israel-Gaza conflict.

But, No 10 cancelled the meeting at the last minute, after Mitsotakis told BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg that the marbles should be returned, as having some of the artefacts in London and the rest in Athens was like cuttingthe Mona Lisa in half.

The Greek PM said he was “deeply disappointed by the abrupt cancellation”. Labour has already described Sunak’s behaviour as “pathetic”, and we can expect its leader Keir Starmer – who did meet with Mitsotakis – to use it as an opportunity to go on the offensive against Sunak.

As our political correspondent Chris Mason writes, the row is as much about politics as it is history.

  7. Sunak's first PMQs since Autumn Statementpublished at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

Today's Prime Minister's Questions comes a week after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt presented his Autumn Statement to the Commons, which included:

    • Main rate of National Insurance cut from 12% to 10% from 6 January
    • Legal minimum wage - known officially as the National Living Wage - to increase from £10.42 to £11.44 an hour from April
    • Universal credit and other working-age benefits in England and Wales to increase by 6.7% from April
    • State pension payments to increase by 8.5% from April, in line with average earnings
    • Extending the 75% business rates discount for pubs, restaurants and leisure businesses for a further year

But yesterday, the Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK's official economic forecaster, said the spending plans represent "a very big fiscal risk".

So we can expect to hear the fallout from the Autumn Statement when Sunak faces MPs shortly.

  8. Migration likely to come up - after minister pledges 'serious reforms'published at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

One likely issue to face the PM today is migration - as it's the first PMQs since last week's figures which revealed net migration into the UK hit a record 745,000 last year.

On Monday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said levels of net migration were "too high" and that the government needed to "do more", without giving details of what that might be.

Right-wing Tory MPs have lined up to urge immigration Robert Jenrick to push Sunak to take action - and yesterday Jenrick pledged to bring forward a "serious package of fundamental reforms" to reduce net migration numbers.

After taking questions from Tory MPs, frustrated at growing migration levels, Jenrick said there were "strong arguments" for introducing a cap on migration and restricting the number of dependents who can accompany migrants to the UK. Read more here.
