  1. What has Sunak said about the Middle East this week?published at 11:09 British Summer Time 17 April

Alongside several other world leaders, Rishi Sunak has been urging restraint after Iran's attack on Israel on Saturday.

Speaking in the Commons on Monday, Sunak told MPs Iran's actions had been "reckless and dangerous", referring to Iran attacking of Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles on Saturday.

He said Iran had "once again shown its true colours" and its attack had been intent on "further destabilising the Middle East".

"Saturday's attack was the act not of the people but of a despotic regime, and it is emblematic of the dangers that we face today, Sunak said.

He added that the UK was "working urgently with our allies to de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed".

Then, in a phone call with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu last night, Sunak warned that "significant escalation will only deepen instability in the region", adding: "This is a moment for calm heads to prevail."

We’re expecting to hear plenty of discussion about this in the chamber later, so stay with us.

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of this week’s Prime Minister's Questions.

Rishi Sunak will be at the despatch box at 12:00 to take questions from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and MPs.

This week’s session - the first since Easter recess - comes as tensions are rising in the Middle East following Iran's attack on Israel on Saturday.

In a phone call to Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu last night, Sunak warned against "significant escalation" and said now was a moment for "calm heads to prevail".

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron is in Israel today for talks with Netanyahu about his country’s response to the attack.

Another topic Sunak could be quizzed on is the government’s plans to ban anyone born after 2009 from buying cigarettes, which MPs voted on last night in the Commons.

The measures survived despite opposition from 59 Tory MPs - including Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch.
