  1. Would the UK have to make new trade deals?published at 20:11 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    By Tamara Kovacevic

    Reality Check

Quote "If we left the EU we'd have to re-negotiate trade deals with over 50 other countries"

The claim: The Treasury's analysis of costs and benefits of European membership says: “If we left the EU we’d have to re-negotiate trade deals with over 50 other countries.”

Reality Check verdict: Yes, the UK would have to renegotiate the current trade deals with non-EU countries. Some would be easier to secure than others.

  2. Would the UK have to obey EU rules to access the single market?published at 17:53 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    By Peter Barnes

    Reality Check

Treasury quote: If EU countries were to offer the UK significant access to the Single Market, they would certainly insist that the UK accepts the associated obligations and rules, as every other country has had to do

The claim: "If EU countries were to offer the UK significant access to the Single Market, they would certainly insist that the UK accepts the associated obligations and rules, as every other country has had to do."

Reality Check verdict: We'd certainly be able to negotiate access to EU markets after Brexit, but it's hard to see other EU countries giving the UK a much better deal than everyone else.

  3. Would Brexit cost your family £4,300 a year?published at 12:16 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    By Anthony Reuben

    Reality Check

Quote saying EU exit would cost £4300 to UK families

The claim: In launching their analysis of the costs and benefits of EU membership, the Treasury said leaving the EU would cost families £4,300 per year by 2030.

Reality Check verdict: Families would not lose £4,300 per year if Britain left the EU.The Treasury model suggests that under one possible outcome of a Brexit, the UK's economy would be reduced by a sum equivalent to £4,300 for every household in the country by 2030. But that's not the same as saying it will cost every household that much.

  4. Checking the Treasury's analysispublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Reality Check

Reality Check will be checking the Treasury analysis on the cost of an EU exit claim by claim today.

The report’s out shortly, but the Chancellor has trailed one finding already – that if the UK left the EU the cut in gross domestic product would be the equivalent of £4,300 for every household in the UK.

A couple of things to note. That's not the same as saying it would cost every household £4,300. A drop in GDP equivalent to £4,300 per household would be expected to cut household incomes, but not by that much.

They’ve used the same approach as the Centre for Economic Performance, and we’ve already explained the shortcomings in that method.

The other thing is that it’s based on the UK only being able to negotiate a trade deal like the one Canada has with the EU. That’s by no means the best case scenario.

If Britain were to negotiate a deal more like the one Norway has with the EU, the impact on the economy would be much less.

And as we’ve warned before, all economic modelling should be taken with a pinch of salt.

  5. How much pressure do EU migrants put on the NHS?published at 18:06 British Summer Time 15 April 2016

    By Tamara Kovacevic

    Reality Check

Boris Johnson "We get uncontrolled immigration"

The claim: Migration from the EU has put huge pressure on public services, including the NHS. Boris Johnson, who's campaigning for Vote Leave, said: “We get uncontrolled immigration, which puts unsustainable pressure on our vital public services”

Reality Check verdict: There are no figures to show the exact cost to the NHS, but the 3 million EU citizens already here are likely to stay even if the UK leaves the EU.

  6. Would Brexit mean an extra £350m a week for NHS?published at 12:18 British Summer Time 15 April 2016

    By Anthony Reuben

    Reality Check

Gisela Stuart saying: Every week we send £350m to Brussels... I would spend it on the NHS.

The claim: Gisela Stuart, co-chair of Vote Leave, says: "Every week we send £350m to Brussels. I'd rather that we control how to spend that money, and if I had that control I would spend it on the NHS."

Reality Check verdict: Leaving the EU would not give the UK an extra £350m a week to spend on the NHS.

    By Peter Barnes

The claim: Jeremy Corbyn says: "The Labour Party's overwhelmingly for staying in", but Kate Hoey says that while MPs support Remain, the wider membership in in favour of Leave.

Reality Check verdict: We have all learned to be suspicious of polling data, but it seems Jeremy Corbyn is right that he leads a party whose members and supporters back Remain by a large margin.

The claim: "There are nearly three-quarters of a million British people living in Spain and over two million living in other parts of Europe."

The claim: A leaflet being sent out by Britain Stronger in Europe says: "Jobs at risk, higher prices and your family worse off by at least £850 a year if we leave Europe."

Reality Check verdict: The £850 figure confuses GDP per household with household income, and is based on economic modelling so needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The claim: Britain Stronger in Europe says 200,000 businesses trade with the EU while Vote Leave says 6% of UK firms export to the EU.

The claim: "Voting to leave the EU risks the holiday pay of millions".

    By Anthony Reuben

The claim: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says that the the referendum campaign has "already created uncertainty for investors" and partly blames recent falls in the pound on fears of a Brexit.

Reality Check verdict: It is likely to be one of the factors weakening the pound, but things like delayed interest rate rises are also responsible.

    By Shelley Phelps

John Caudwell saying: The immigration policy is set by the Europeans and not by the British.

The claim: John Caudwell says: "The immigration policy is set by the Europeans and not by the British", adding that the UK has no control over who other countries give passports to.

Reality Check verdict: He's overstating his case - it's true that Britain has to let EU citizens come to the UK, and that's part of the terms of membership of the EU. But Britain has complete control over immigration from outside the EU, and a say in the policies the EU develops.
