  4. A new liftpublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 18 May 2016

The Queen and Prince Philip will be using a lift this year rather than the monarch's staircase in the House of Lords.

Lawrence Ward, the former Serjeant at Arms, tells the story that one year, after the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had entered the lift at the end of the ceremony, the lift was called up instead of down by an unwitting pair of cleaners.

The doors opened, and they were brought face to face with the monarch, the Duke and Black Rod.

We are assured that everyone found it very amusing.
