    Gianni Pitella

The leader of the Socialist and Democrat group, Italian MEP Gianni Pitella, weighs in with a call to take on multinational companies who have "defrauded" national taxation systems.

He says he thanks Mr Juncker for recognising the contribution of Italy in receiving migrants arriving in Europe - but that the EU's current migration rules must be revised.

However, he says his group will not vote to get rid of the principle that the first country should be responsible for new arrivals.

  10. Juncker: UK 'will regret Brexit'published at 09:13 British Summer Time 13 September 2017

State of the Union speech 2017

    European Parliament
    Strasbourg

Moving briefly to the subject of Brexit, Jean-Claude Juncker tells MEPs that the UK's departure from the EU will be a "sad and tragic moment" but the referendum result must be respected.

Seemingly addressing some of the British MEPs he adds: "I think that you will regret it as well soon".

However, he says Brexit will not be the "be all and end all" of the EU - and "is not the future of Europe".

State of the Union speech 2017

    European Parliament
    Strasbourg

    Jean-Claude Juncker

Another big policy idea is announced, as Mr Juncker proposes merging the roles of President of the European Commission and the European Council.

The suggestion, he adds, does not "target in any way" the work of his "excellent friend" Donald Tusk - the current holder of the European Council presidency.

Merging the two roles would "better reflect the true nature of our European Union", he adds.

  13. 'Functioning defence union' plan for 2025published at 09:00 British Summer Time 13 September 2017

State of the Union speech 2017

    European Parliament
    Strasbourg

The eurozone should get its own dedicated "economy and finance" minister, Mr Juncker continues.

Those countries sharing the single currency do not need their own budget, he says, but there should be a separate line within the existing EU budget for them.

The EU should work to build a "functioning European defence union" by 2025.

He also expresses "sympathy" for the idea of electing trans-national MEPs to the European Parliament.

The idea has been mooted as a possible replacement for British MEPs after Brexit.

  16. Juncker: No Turkey EU membership 'in foreseeable future'published at 08:54 British Summer Time 13 September 2017

State of the Union speech 2017

    European Parliament
    Strasbourg

The announcements came thick and fast on the issue of future integration.

It is "high time" for Romania and Bulgaria to join the passport-free Schengen area, he says - and Croatia should also join when it is ready.

The euro is "destined" to be the common currency of the entire EU, he adds - and announces that non-euro members will get assistance from a new "accession instrument".

A "credible enlargement prospect" should be offered to the Western Balkans, he says.

However, recent developments in Turkey means its membership should be ruled out for the "foreseeable future", he adds.

  19. Juncker announces EU agency for labour marketpublished at 08:46 British Summer Time 13 September 2017

State of the Union speech 2017

    European Parliament
    Strasbourg

    Jean-Claude Juncker

Following on from the five integration options previously outlined in various EU position papers, Mr Juncker tells MEPs he would like to present a sixth - his personal vision for future integration.

The European Union, he says, must be based on the "freedom to speak our minds", and equality between all its members.

Europe, he adds, must "breathe with the Eastern lung and the Western lung".

This must include better application of worker posting rules, he says.

Announcing plans for a new EU "supervisory authority" to oversee the labour market, he adds:

    Quote Message

People doing work in the same place must receive the same remuneration"
